•Churgeon:
n. Archaic.
A surgeon.
[Middle English cirurgien, from Old French, from Latin chīrurgia, surgery.

•From the book, "The Echo of the Black Horn, by Ethel Knight; page 114:
"Mrs, Sally Parker was one of the good women near Ellisville who aided the band, not because of her attitude in regard to secession or slavery, but because Captain Knight was her personal friend. On several occasions, he had done her service.
A short while before the war broke out, he had traveled to Enterprise, and had purchased for her two slaves from the market there, and had delivered them to her at Ellisville."
"So it was quite expected of Mrs. Parker to prepare a good meal for her friend when he needed one, or to provide him with a good bed, if he chose to remain overnight."
James Leander Parker, her husband, was possibly the saloon keeper that is mentioned on page 137.
