Fan Scrapbook Project Update: The scrapbook of fan memories, pics, and other goodies was compiled and given to Tom and Dick May 22, 2004, at their appearance in Nashville. Among the Smothers Others who contributed: comedian Jack Swersie, comedy juggler Jim Oakley, singer Vikki Carr, SBCH alum Mason Williams, and illusionists Penn And Teller. The show was excellent (as always--never been disappointed with a show yet). And to say that the backstage encounter went well would be something of an understatement. :)
Thanks again Tom and Dick. And thanks to everyone for your contributions and moral support.

NOW AVAILABLE...NEW FEATURE: SMOTHERS BROTHERS EPISODE GUIDE
Coming soon to video is "Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital". This 4-disc set, released October 12, 2004, includes all 13 episodes of the short-run series (including Dick's cameo in the episode Butterfingers), a featurette about the real-life Kingdom Hospital, and other goodies. Previous releases have included "The Jack Paar Collection" (segments from the late-night "Jack Paar Show," the primetime "Jack Paar Program", the "Jack Paar: Smart Television" PBS special, March 2004), "Mr. Bill's Disasterpiece Theatre" (February 2004), and the CD and video/DVD editions of "This Land Is Your Land: The Folk Years" (November 2003).
Ouoted from various news sources, including the wire services and CNN: Thirty-seven years after his death, comedian Lenny Bruce has been given a pardon. New York Governor George Pataki has accepted the petition and letters from many who have been asking for the pardon of Bruce's conviction for being allegedly verbally obscene during a 1964 comedy show. Among the pettioners: Tom and Dick, Robin Williams, the Bruce family, and numerous first-admendment attorneys.
Quoted from various entertainment news sources, including Variety: Tom and Dick Smothers have agreed to play themselves in a hybrid biopic/mockumentary in development at Paul Reiser's Nuance Productions. Roger Director (of "Moonlighting" fame) is writing the untitled project, with "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" alum David Steinberg (6769; "Curb Your Enthusiasm") attached to direct.
Reiser, Ken Kragen and Rick Marcelli will serve as executive producers, with Nuance's Craig Knizek and Mitch Semel on board as producers. The flick will be a movie-within-a-movie featuring the Smothers Brothers acting as advisers to the producers of a fictional Smothers Brothers biopic. Actors will play younger versions of the brothers.
The project will explore how the two got their start, their rise to stardom and their controversial variety show, which CBS yanked due to disagreements over content. Compared to most celebrity bio-movies, the concept here is pretty original. Hope to see it soon; will let you know when it plays.

Yours truly (or rather, an essay written by yours truly) has been included in the Fall 2003 issue of the Entertainment Consumers Exchange newsletter. The online edition of their newsletter now contains the essay (a copy of the printed edition can be requested); the text can also be found here.
"Carol Burnett And Friends", in which Tom made a 1979 appearance, is coming to TV Land. The show was tentatively expected to be cycled into the schedule April, 2004, though it is already on the schedule after making marathon runs on Saturday nights in January.
Turner Classic Movies has a spot for site visitors to "suggest a movie". Best chances for a Smothers entry to TCM: "Alice Through The Looking Glass" (1966) and "Get To Know Your Rabbit" (1972). Go to TCM's site, select "suggest a movie," and state your case.
"The Kids Are Alright", the 1979 film of The Who featuring Tom and the group's literally explosive 1967 appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, is being released as a Special/Deluxe Edition DVD September 30, 2003. The film, already in VHS/DVD release, will contain added footage, as well as being remastered for visual and sound quality.
The Swinging 60s Zone needs you!
Wayne, the webmaster of Swinging 60s Zone, is "looking into the idea of having a page on my website called The Fans Zone where fans of any 50's or 60's act can tell other people why they liked or still like the acts today. This includes stories of meetings or even if a song has in some way become an important part of your life. Lots of people have a song that makes them think back to times gone by. So if you have something like above please e-mail me as I and many vistors to the site would be very interested in it. Any pictures sent please need to be owned by the person sending it. Also most welcome will be pictures of fans and stars together."
Got any good Smothers stories you'd like to add? Let Wayne know.
The May 2003 issue of TV Guide Crosswords is their "Sibling Revelry" issue (with the fictional sisters from "Charmed" on the cover), so it was more than fitting that the Brothers be in there. Clues about them are littered (saying that in a good way) through the issue, as well as a SmoBro-themed puzzle. Since it is dated May 2003, it usually means that this is the end date, so get it while you can.
Up for requests for pre-orders at Amazon (and hopefully other retailers) is the DVD collection for "The Smothers Brothers Show", the 1965-66 sitcom. To get on the waiting list, go here.
"The Kingston Trio Reunion" comes to DVD May 13. The DVD includes the original 1982 PBS special which includes an appearance by Tom and Dick. Go here for more details. Other video collections to watch for: "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" and "Burke's Law".
I went to the covers section of the "50th Anniversary" section of TV Guide, and noticed that Tom and Dick were on more covers than I thought they were--four instead of two...6/10/67, 2/10/68, 4/5/69, 12/27/69 (irony of the '69 year-end issue: they share the cover with Nixon and Johnson--the probable impetuses for the cancellation of the first Smother Brothers Comedy Hour--as well as Neil Armstrong and the World Series winning NY Mets). Two of the covers are regular, promo-type pictures, one was an illustrated cover (though not by Al Hirschfeld--bummer), and the other was a more collage cover (the '69 year-end issue). AND...you can send these as e-cards! Also, they are taking
memories of our favorites in television here.
This from the Official Site:
Dick will be appearing as Todd in the April 29 episode of Kingdom Hospital. What was originally supposed to be April 28 counter-programming to one of the Law And Order series is now April 29 counter-programming to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Tape CSI...Watch Kingdom Hospital!
Tom and Dick will be Grand Marshalls of the NASCAR Dodge Savemart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA on Sunday, June 27. For more details (race, radio, and TV times), check above, as well as these places of information: The Performance Racing Network
, Infineon Raceway, and NASCAR
In March 2004, Tom will speak to the National Press Club in Washington D.C. when Wolf Trap announces its season schedule (note their June 2004 appearance). In a related tidbit, Tom and Dick have been invited to become Artist Members of the Board of Directors of the prestigious Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts.
Denby and Dick are Honorary Co-Chairmen of the Comedy Fest in Sarasota. This year's guest performer is Joan Rivers.
While in Las Vegas for their upcoming (10/28-11/15/03) stint at the Hilton, Tom and Dick will be taking part in the Las Vegas Comedy Festival 10/29-11/02, a convention of sorts for comedy in general and for up-and-coming comedians. On October 30, they will receive yet another honor for the year: a career achievement award. Also honored at this fest: Rita Rudner and Wayne Newton, who will receive the award honored in Bob Hope's name.
Get your VCRs and TiVOs ready for some first-run appeances:
Tom and Dick recently (the week of October 13) taped a new week of shows for "Hollyood Squares". Catch those January 5-9. Coming up in the meantime: Tom and Dick will take part of the "CBS At 75" special, live Novermber 2 at 8PM ET. Tom and Dick will present the Rap Award at the American Music Awards live telecast on ABC November 16. For those familiar with American Music Awards lore, this is no typo or way-late April Fool's joke: likely (and purely a guess) because of the fuss between the AMAs and Grammys over performers and presenters, the AMAs have been moved to November. Tom and Dick recently guest-starred as building contractors on "Life With Bonnie", October 10 on ABC.
The Friars Club, who recently roasted Denis Leary, will roast Tom and Dick at a luncheon in New York City on October 3. Hopefully the power will stay on by then. :) Though it also looks like we won't to get to see the fun either. :(
Tom and Dick will appear on "The CBS 75th Anniversary Special", live from New York--but on Sunday night, November 2.
Tom and Dick will appear again at the Comedy Store In Hollywood July 30 and 31. These appearances will benefit "Children Of The Night". For reservations please call (818) 908-4474.
Grabbing the chalk again...The Hollywood Bowl is honoring Tom and Dick by inducting them into their Hall Of Fame, along with Nathan Lane, Patty Lupone, and the late Leopold Stokowski. The event will take place at the Bowl on June 27 with a benefit for Music Matters.
Before then Tom will participate with Mort Sahl in a writers' bloc panel and question-and-answer at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles June 2. The subject will be Gerald Nachman's book "Seriously Funny: The Rebel Comedians Of The 1950s And 1960s".
One more in the "Win" colum: The Video Software Dealers Association will present Tom and Dick with their "George Carlin Freedom Of Expression Award" on July 29, 2003 in Las Vegas. The accolades just keep coming...
On April 15 a new book by Gerald Nachman, "Seriously Funny: The Rebel Comedians Of The 1950's And 1960's" was released, published by Pantheon Books/Random House. The book includes a major chapter on Tom and Dick, as well Smothers Others Bob Newhart, Elaine May, Dick Gregory, Steve Allen, and Bill Cosby. Yours truly highly recommends the book, for fans of comedy in general, and the SmoBros in particular. If this is the teaser to the eventual biography by David Bianculli,...then David's book should be a treat!
Tom and Dick will participate in a university satellite seminar sponsored by the Museum of Television and Radio on Tuesday, February 25, 2003. The subject under discussion will be controversial moments in the history of television. The program will be telecast live to colleges and universities across the country.
And on the eve of its January 28, 2003, video release, "Smothered", Bravo's documentary about Tom and Dick's censorship struggles on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, produced and directed by Maureen Muldaur, has won a prestigious CINE GOLDEN EAGLE AWARD. WAY TO GO, MAUREEN AND COMPANY--AND THAT IS A COMPLIMENT! :) But then, borrowing some from a famous tagline, "with a name like Smothers--with or about them--it has to be good". On top of that, Tom and Dick will be honored with a distinguished CINE Trailblazers Tribute. They will all receive their honors at the 44th Annual CINE Golden Eagle Film and Video Awards event on February 27 in Washington D.C.
[Note: With the recent addition of Bravo to the NBC network and cable family, NBC has been setting up some of its select new series, Boomtown and Kingpin, for rebroadcasts on the Bravo Cable Network. Let's hope the Powers That Be At NBC would do reciprocal favors and rebroadcast Bravo shows on the Big Network. Hmmmm...I wonder what they couild start with...Hmmmm...]
This 2-hour Bravo production is one of TV Guide's "Don't Miss" picks in its 11/30-12/6 issue as an "insightful documentary", as well as the People Magazine "Tube Pick Of The Week" in its 12/9 issue.
Docurama appears to be among those in a long list with early dibs to sell the video edition of the the "Smothered" documentary, as shown here, as well as many online stores. Would be nice if the "Big Boys"--Wal-Mart, KMart, Target, etc.--would carry it. [A nice coincidence of the release: the 42nd anniversary of their first-ever television appearance...]
"Curb Your Tongue Knave", the Smothers Brothers' fourth album with Mercury Records, originally released in 1963, is being re-released on CD. See below for track listing, and, while a handful of other online stores do carry this title, for the fastest service on the planet, check out the Smothers Brothers Logo Shop for ordering details. "Smothered" is also available for pre-ordering through the Logo Shop.
[Here's hoping more will follow in the near future....]
November 13, Tom and Dick were on hand to fete Bob Newhart (known for his hit TV series, as well as classic comedy bits hinged on one-sided phone conversations), with "The Mark Twain Prize", televised from the famed Kennedy Center on PBS.
Mother Smothers' Favorite Sons (yes, note the plural) were among the recipients of Free Speech Tribute Awards at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado, on March 2, 2002. Others who attended the fest included "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" alum David Steinberg, George Carlin, Dick Gregory, "Politically Incorrect" host Bill Maher, "Doonesbury" cartoonist Garry Trudeau, and "Hardball" journalist Chris Matthews. Now if only we can get an engagement with a girl named Emmy (wink wink)....

Fans have a chance to vote for Glen Campbell (SBCH 6769, Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour) in their current poll asking who fans would like to see play at the Grand Old Opry. See the poll at the bottom right of the Grand Old Opry site. Glen also has a new collection coming October 7--"Legacy 1961-2002".
Among the recently found thought-lost gems: back issues of Fiddler Magazine. John Hartford (SBCH 6769) had written a column in this magazine, The magazine still carries back issues, as well as an instructional video called "John Hartford's Old Time Fiddling". John demonstrates many techniques and bowing styles, and breaks down several tunes (Sally Johnson, The Squirrel Hunters, Hamilton Iron Works, Flea Market Breakdown, Acrobat's Hornpipe). Included is a booklet with transcriptions of tunes taught and examples. Best for advanced beginning and intermediate fiddlers, but all levels will get a lot out of it. More info cna be found at Fiddler Magazine
SBCH 6769 alum Steve Martin returned as host of the 75th anniversary Oscarcast on March 23; Martin last hosted the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001. The month of March has been a mixed blessing for Steve: while the Oscars had one of its lesser ratings farings, competing with a war in Iraq, lots of folks went to the theaters to enjoy the other competitor for Oscar ratings, his new movie, "Bringing Down The House", co-starring Queen Latifah. The film topped the box office three consecutive weeks (a feat last done by "The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers" late 2002) before finally relenting to the Chris Rock film, "Head Of State". With a take of more than $100 million in a movie that can thus far make the claim of being the only movie in 2003 to "bowl a turkey" at the box office (without being a turkey), who says Steve Martin isn't still on top of his game of hit movies? "Bringing Down The House" came to video/DVD August 5, 2003, making more than $60 million in its first week of release.
SBCH 6769 alum David Steinberg is among 11 Canadians, along with Saturday Night Live alum Mike Meyers, who will be inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame, located on King Street in downtown Toronto. Meyers famously got his start when he was hired by Toronto's Second City Comedy Troupe on the day he completed his final high school exam in 1981. In an interview with the Toronto Star, Steinberg, who originally garnered notoriety on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late 1960s, commented: "I wonder if my father, who never lived to see his dream of an all-Yiddish speaking Canada, would have been happy with this. ... I think so."
While "Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher"--where Tom made his last appearance June 17--is now off the air, its host has found some new ground to cover. Check out his book, "If You Ride Alone, You Ride With Bin Laden". And looks like Bill Maher has rebounded from the cancellation of "Politically Incorrect'' with another current events forum on HBO. "Real Time with Bill Maher" is set to debut on the cable network Feb. 21. From Bill's official site is a

While Bill Maher is back on television, he is back on cable, where Freedom Of Speech is somewhat freer--but the audience is much smaller. Still gives new meaning to this doesn't it?

This will affect many groups related to all kinds of subjects including great ones related to the brothers, Mom Liked Them Best (1999-2002) and YoYo SmoBro (2002--). The Smothers Brothers, contrary to any possible "Where are they now?" segments (and at least one has been made), never left. As a matter of fact, they're still around and entertaining audiences. They may be coming near you:

"Singers have to have hits; entertainers can work forever" Kenny Rogers (Kenny was speaking of Glen Campbell when he made this statement, but I think this is also very fitting of Tom and Dick as well...)
