KKOL (AM 1300, Seattle, WA) Maritime STA

Here are some photos that I took of the Coast Angel (formerly the Coastal Ranger) on 11/26/04. This ship houses the STA transmitter for KKOL-AM 1300 which is presently the only maritime AM broadcast station in the US. The Coast Angel is anchored at the west end of Elliott Bay near Jack Block Park directly opposite from downtown Seattle. The AM antenna is the white 75' Valcom center-loaded fiberglass vertical mounted on the ship's stern.

A closer view of the base of the Valcom antenna. The metal container behind the antenna houses the transmitter. AC power is supplied from shore.

Another view with the famous Space Needle in downtown Seattle in the background to the right.

The name has been changed on both the side and stern of the vessel. Obviously the switch from Coastal Ranger to Coast Angel only required changing a few letters.

Telephoto view of the stern. It reads "Coast Angel - Seattle, WA".
