An unusual and rare radio themed post card from my collection. This card served as a QSL card for New York City Fire Department radio station WNYF. The front side shows a pair of New York City fireboats in action.
The date and time slots on the card are blank. However, the card was signed by Fire Chief & Commissioner John J. McElligott who served in those positions in 1939 and 1940. A current FDNY award is named in honor of Chief McElligott.
The back of the card indicates that WNYF transmitted on 1630 kc (kHz) with 500 watts into a quarter-wave insulated tower located at the Fire College in Queens. It was remote controlled from the Manhattan Fire Alarm Central Office, Central Park, Manhattan.
The card indicates that the fireboats transmitted back using General Electric 50 watt transmitters on 35.6 mc (MHz) which was then considered as the UHF band.
