This station was located in the lower parking lot area of Coors Field (the Colorado Rockies pro baseball stadium) until August 2008. For most of the time it was there it incorrectly identifed with the call letters WNEN689. According to the FCC database those call letters do not exist. Several inquiries about this to Denver have gone unanswered. In 2006 this transmitter began carrying the endless ID loop that had previously been broadcast on the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) 40 watt ERP "superpower" TIS on 530 kHz located at Colorado Blvd and I-25. It even carried the call letters for the CDOT station which were WPLX284. And it identified the station's location as I-25 and Colorado Blvd even though it was actually transmitting from behind Coors Field. Again, inquiries to Denver went unanswered. But CDOT responded to tell me that they had lost their control link to the I-25 & Colorado transmitter due to the light rail construction project in the area and that this was a temporary solution until that link was reestablished. As of September 2008 the 530 kHz transmitter is still off the air. Just before the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August 2008, the 890 kHz TIS was relocated to a point just southwest of Invesco Field at Mile High (the stadium for the Denver Broncos pro football franchise). Invesco Field was to be the location of Senator Obama's acceptance speech for his nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate. During the DNC this TIS transmitted a short endless loop mentioning I-25 traffic and the DNC with no call letters given. As of 9/8/08 when I took these photos, this unit was transmitting an open carrier with no audio. |
Here is a photo of the new transmitter site for 890 kHz. It is located at the junction of Colfax Avenue and Federal Blvd which are two major streets in Denver.
Here is another view looking east with part of downtown Denver in the background.
This view looking northeast shows the proximity of the transmitter to Invesco Field at Mile High stadium. I-25 runs past the other side of this stadium. It is 8 to 10 lanes wide through Denver and is heavily congested much of the day.
