NOVEMBER 2007

 .
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Thursday, 11-1-07
Today's highlight ws joinng at Mom Helen's for a card-slinging shoot-out with sister Rose, Mother Superior (a.k.a. aunt Eva), the Victor, and Bob.
.
A lot of smiles and laughs throughout the afternoon with this agile quintet of card-slingers!
.
Then Bob drove home, slowly, seeing several deer alongside or crossing the road in front of him.
.
Upon getting home, the immediate task was to move from the outside, 8 watermelons, and 70 or so, winter squashes, into the Sunrise Room to keep them from freezing tonight and durng the rest of the week.
.
Seven crates of produce!
.
The final task was to do a quick inventory of foods that Bob can offer guests for breakfasts, lunches, and suppers, as well as snacks, during the coming weekend.
.
After checking all the pantries, refrigerators, and freezers, Bob is ready!
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::
Friday, 11-2-07
Picked up a screen repaired by the Amish with a heavy pet window screen, that I hope the grasshoppers will not be able to eat (as they have our vinyl screens)!
.
Visited with neighbor Doug and saw the inside of his barn, a really old building in good shape.
.
Carried the 7 crates of goodies outside to let them chill a bit till late tonight, and then I'll bring them back in again to avoid the freeze.
.
Staying inside mostly today, to prepare for guests and also curling up a bit with The Sibling Society, which dovetails perfecly with my recent weeks of smorgsbord readings of Loren Eisely and Joseph Campbell. (Thank-you, Don).
.
Spent some time bird or cat-watching, including watching some cats that were bird-watching. :-)
.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
Saturday, 11-3-07
Six shot Vidovich and son Estefan arrived this morning with eldest son Gary and his son Blake.
.
Dragan had his chain saw and the 5 of us went to work on the brush surrounding a very large fallen tree, just north of the house.
.
After a few hours of work we had quite a stack of firewood and one humongous brush pile!
.
We then cut 5 hardwood, red cedar trees, in the northeast corner of the property so that Bob can begin working on them for firewood to be used a year from now.
.
In the meantime, they are starting to dry out, to make good firewood.
.
Dragan did the cutting and Bob pulled them out of the woods with a big tractor and a log chain.
.
LeRoy stopped by with his friend Marty, and they went for two long hikes on segments ofthe nearby Ice Age Trail.
.
Then the seven of us joined up at The Pizza Hut with daughter-in-law, Edna, and children Kaitlin, Lucas, Kierstin, and Sophia, and Kaitlin's boyfriend Randell.
.
The 13 of us sampled mannnnnnnnnnny varieties of pizza, ( thankkkk-you,
Gary and Edna!)
.
LeRoy and Marty got a biiiiiiiiiiiiiig campfire going east of the house and various constellations of "story tellers" gathered around the fire till almost midnight.
.
It was a great fire, leaving a very hot bed of coals to toast marshmallows and sausages.
.
A facinatingly, beautiful, hot fire!
.
Mesmerizing.
.
We heard a group of coyotes singing, apparently, with great enthusiasm and joy (and awe?)
,
While at the restaurant, everybody had a chance to talk to Kathy (in Kentucky with her mom, Newell, for two weeks), with several of us talking to Kathy twice!
.
And so, one by one, all the little owlets toddled off to bed, and the bigger owls were right behind them.
.
Except for one bumpity owl, still sitting at the fire by himself, merging into the flames.....
:::::::::::::::::::::::::
Sunday, 11-4-07
The omelet king made six omelets using a total of 26 eggs!
.
Some with cheese, onion, bell peppers, or "nothing."
.
Sophia, at 4 1/2, ordered her omelet with salt and pepper. :-)
.
Then we all went out to garden 3, except Marty, who took the 16 pound monster mall and went to split the wood that we cut yesterday.
The other eleven were picking the dried pole beans from a longgggggggggggg fence of pole beans, filling 7 very large pails (5 gallon pails, or larger), while Bob picked two rows of rutabagas (4 pails) and one large pail of beets.
.
We now have 19 boxes or big pails of produce in the Sunrise Room to keep them from freezing tonight!
.
Lots of goodbyes, and then the caravan of the 10 Illinoisans headed down the driveway, to return to Libertyville.
.
That left Marty, LeRoi, and Bob to relax and chat for a while, and then the two fellows headed back to Wisconsin Dells, with Marty to soon return to Missouri.
.
As soon as the last car went down the driveway, the 4 "bashful" felines, began making their appearances.
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::
Monday, 11-5-07
Today was a work day inside, with the exception of loading the hay wagon with 20+ pails, boxes, crates, etc. and taking them up to the pole barn for storage.
.
Bob spent the entire day alternating between sitting work at the word processor (recording notes from his past month's readings), and washing dishes, and other housework.
.
A stir fry of green and yellow bell peppers and yellow onions, on brown rice, turned out to be very tasty.
.
Another tray of butternut squash cooking in the wood cook-stove oven.
.
Kathy continues to enjoy visiting her mom in Kentucky.
.
And Bob kept the wood cook-stove burning all day, finally letting it burn out around midnight.
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Tuesday, 11-6-07
Bob joined sister Rose, brother Ron, and aunt Eva at mom Helen's for a quintet ot card-slinging.
.
Bob was the top gun today.
.
Kathy called from Kentucky to let us know that her mom, Newell, had fallen and broken a hip, and had been taken by helicopter to Lexington, Kentucky.
.
Kathy was about to leave and drive her mom's car the 100 or so miles to Lexington, and visit her mom at the hospital.
.
Kathy's brother, Clay, lives in Lexington, so Kathy has a place to stay while she finds out how things are going for her mom.
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Wednesday, 11-7-07 to
Sunday, 11-11-07
Kathy and her brother Clay, are spending every day and evening with their mother, Newell, at the Lexington, Kentucky hospital.
.
They are now deciding where Newell will go for her rehab work, as well as finding a facility that has space available.
.
We talk on the phone at least once a day and Kathy is usually with her mom until late at night.
.
During the week, Bob had the wood cookstove burning all day and evening, baking in the oven, lots of squashes and a mountain of brown rice.
.
Nights and weekends, we use the baseboard electric heat taking advantage of the lower, off-peak, electrical rates.
.
A major project has been spending time, almost daily, in the three pantries and three rerigerators, cleaning, organizing, sorting, cooking, and disposing of canned, boxed, and bagged, and dated, foodstuffs. And also sorting, coolking, and giving away garden veggies from the 17 boxes and pails in the Sunrise Room.
.
Bob continues his current daily journey into the early morning hours, of reading and note-taking from the works of Robert Bly (The Sibling Society), nearly all the works of Loren Eiseley (The Star Thrower, etc.) and most of the works of Joseph Campbel (now down to two of his posthumous works, The Power Of Myth, with Bill Moyers, and A Joseph Campbell Companion (Reflections on the art of living).
.
A peak night-time experience this week, was sitting out under the stars, and just watching, and getting lost in, the heavens.
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Monday, 11-12-07
A day of housework, veggies, and working through my Joe Campbell note-taking (about the 15th book), on the word processor.
.
Over a thousand entries entries so far, ranging in size from a sentence to a page.
.
Now I have only one book to read and take notes from, and that is: A Joseph Campbell Companion, (subtitled: Reflections on the Art of Living).
.
Loretta and Melissa stopped by for cheesy scrambled eggs, Nature's Bakery wheat toast, tropical fruitcocktail, juice, and conversation. And baked butternut squash, a whole tray of 7 of them just came out of the oven of that old wood cookstove
.
And a box of 18 winter squash went home with the ladies. :-)
.
Spoke to Kathy (so did the ladies). twice today, and it looks like Kathy will be driving her mom to a rehab place tomorrow that will help her mom to "get back on her feet."
.
Also did some phone talk with Susan, Leroy, and Therese, fellow Wisconsinites all.
.
Walked outside twice tonight to do some star gazing, and both times I stepped outside, a pheasant rooster cackled down in the marsh. Very unusual pheasant behavior in the dark.
.
It was really dark, so dark that I couldn't find my chair and had to go back into the house for a flashlight.
.
Also heard what sounded like a coyote howling, but ended up like an owl hooting. .
A combination of sounds that I have never heard before.
.
Maybe it wasn't all the same critter?
.
I also did some meditating, looking at the stars, and when my eyes unfocused, while looking at the heavens, it was kind of heavenly, to see the heavens gone. :-)
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Tuesday, 11-13-07
Made my weekly trip into civilization today, stopping at the library to return my treasure trove of Joe Campbell books, then picked up another trove for my mom, who reads about 3 novels a week.
.
I have been doing this for years and mom always makes a little "x" on the lower left corner of the last page, so that I don't bring any of the same books back.
.
It is getting quite difficult to find X-less books!
.
This time I looked at over 20 x-rated books in a row, before I found one, that mom hadn't read (and x-rated). :-)
.
We have gone through hundreds of large print books over the years.
.
I read the summaries to find books that have themes that she likes. Her favorite three themes are the west, romance, and Indians.
.
And when all three are in the same novel, she can't put the book down.
.
Kathy is now spending her afternoons and evenings with her mom, Newell, at the rehab facility in Corbin, Kentucky, and afterwards, driving her mom's car to Pineville, to sleep in her mom's house.
.
Members of her church are caring for her dog.
.
What with my housework and note-taking, I'm still up at 3 a.m.!
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Wednesday, 11-14-07
Lots of progress on all the food cabinets, getting rid of dated food, 46 bags so far, each weighing 5 to 10 pounds.
.
The two pantries still have nearly 200 items.
.
I am now working on the 3 rerigerators, each of which also has a freezer, plus, 2 large freezers in the pole-barn, chock full of food, mostly frozen veggies.
.
And, there are a few other miscellaneous places where a "few" items are stored. :-)
.
Hard to believe that one person can use so many dishes, silerware, and pots and pans in one day!
.
I think some group has a party in here when I working outside!
.
Kathy plans to make arrangements to get home, a day or two, before Thanksgiving.
.
She is pleased with the progress her mom is already making in getting back on her feet again.
.
Two very dear friends, who do not know each other, both called me today for poker-playing advice.
.
So we had two, over-the-phone, poker seminars. :-)
.
Interesting, in that I haven't played poker in over 10 years! (I quit after I got the main part of the house paid for) :-)
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Thursday, 11-15-07
I have taken so many things up to the pole barn for storage, that I keep meeting myself coming from the other way!
.
Gave both tractors a big drink of anti-freeze (almost a gallon each), to keep things flowing during the freezing weather.   :-)
.
Kathy is with her mom every afternoon and evening, so we always talk, at least once, after she gets back to her mom's house, late in the evening.
.
I still have some field work to do, but inside work has all my priorities, until Kathy gets back.
.
That wood cookstove, has been heating the main part of the house all week, up until 8 p.m., at the same time, I am able to bake in the oven and cook or saute on the top.
.
I do have to admit that I have two of the prettiest, neatest, cleanest pantries, I have ever seen (and it only took two weeks!)   :-)
.
Heard from a friend, needing santuary, who is way down in Missouri, that I have not seen in years, who is going to try to get up here by late Thanksgiving Eve with her 3 year old.
.
I (Wisconsin) asked Kathy (Kentucky) to give her (Missouri) a call, and they had a nice long chat.
.
Phone calls, e-mails, and visits, during the past few weeks, have again reminded me of how rich we are in the "a bun dance" of friendships.
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::
Friday, 11-16-07
Been celebrating meals with candle-light dinners, sort of treating myself, to me.
.
Mel flew in from Oklahoma this afternoon, rented a car at the Dane County Airport and went to her house, near Wyocena, prepping it for Open House Showings tomorrow.
.
I made us a supper of our home-grown, diced beets and rutabagas, stir fried with brown rice, and a liberal few cups of yellow onions.
.
Also, butternut squash, cranberry sauce, and cornbread muffins.
.
Got a chance to chat a lot while I did dishes, and then got out two LARGE pails, one of honey, and the other molasses, gifts from Felipe, who has had them for about 10 years!
.
If these pails were filled with water they would have weighed about 50 pounds, but I think honey might be heavier that water.
.
Anyway, I had an interesting time playing with different sized mini-pails, funnels, etc., trying to get over 100 pounds of sweetness into 10 smaller containers, each of 5 quarts, or less.
.
I think Mel was impressed with the mess I made. :-)
.
But, molasses, honey, and Bob Thompson, all three have this in common. All three, clean up really well!
.
Needless to say, some molasses and honey got on me, so I am now the sweetest guy in Wisconsin!
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Saturday. 11-17-07
Chores, cooking, and more chores.
.
I kind of feel like I am on vacation without having to feed the wood cookstove every hour.
.
I do look forward to the evenings and the weekends and the lower-cost, electrical heat.
.
Deer season opened this morning, but Hunter Bob did not buy a license, so I was luxurious snuggling under a comforter at 6 a.m., instead of sitting 30 feet up in a tree, waitig for the sun to rise.
.
Didn't miss it a bit.
All our freezers (3 small, 2 large), are so full of veggies, that there is no room for venison.
.
Mel (Carmella), came home after dark and we had stirfries, brown rice, cranberries, lemon muffins, and coffee.
.
Tonight I'm getting to bed before midnight.
.
Hooray!
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Sunday, 11-18-07
Mel left to return to visit her for-sale Wyocena house, prior to catching a flight back to Oklahoma
.
And then, a quiet day of relaxation,
with a few phone calls from dear friends, mentors all,
who each in their own way,
knowingly
and/or
unknowingly,
encourage me
to get to know myself better.
.
Also had a really nice chat with Newell, Kathy's mom, who expressed her great appreciation for Kathy being with her, before, during , and after, Newell's fall, injury, surgery, and subsequent physical therapy.
.
Also, received a very touching letter from a former Spanish student of 40 years ago, who shared her perception of me as a "profesor" and "sort of a local prophet."
:-)
Not-with-standing, all my busy-ness during these past 3 weeks, I am looking forward to seeing my "guardian angel," return from Kentucky this week.
.
Deer season opened up yesterday, in our area, and will continue untill next Sunday.
.
None of the people I was interested in hunting with here, were available, so, I decided not to hunt deer this year.
.
Another factor was taking time out to dress-out, the deer, cut and package the meat, etc., especially when all our freezers are completely chock full of food already.
.
And so, this ends another seven days of journal entries, to be added to NOVEMBER 2007.
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Monday, 11-19-07.
Made the second of my annual fall pilgrimages to Gumz's Vegetable Muck Farms, to pick up an initial 100 pounds of potatoes, fifty of Norland Red, and fifty of Yukon Gold.
.
Each of the fifty pound bags, contains 10, 5 pound bags, making it easier for us to use, as well as being already bagged for gifts, which I will begin delivering tomorrow.
.
Had great conversations with Barb W and Mom Helen today, both of them very interesting and thought-provoking for me.
.
And, both included delightful bits of insightful humor.
.
When I spoke to Mom on the phone she said that she was "sicker than a dog,"
so I drove to Portage and spent a delightful afternoon, listening to Mom vent about a few things that recently happened to her, with her only remaining sibling.
.
I am totally impressed with my mom's story-telling abilities, which inevitably, always, have both of us laughing.
.
Not once during our afternoon together did she mention not feeling well, so I guess it is true that laughter is the best medicine.   :-)
.
Kathy is picking her brother, Clay, up at the Greyhound bus stop at 3 p.m. this afternoon, and then Clay will drive Kathy to catch an 8:45 p.m. Greyhound in Kentucky, that will get her into Chicago at 5 a.m. tomorrow morning, at which time she will call me, to let me know, that she is only one more bus ride from Madison, arriving tomorrow, at 11:45 a.m.
.
It is awesome,
to await,
the arrival,
of an angel.   :-)
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Tuesday, 11-20-07
Kahy called to let Bob know that her bus had arrived in Chicago.
.
Yes, it arrived, with the opportunity to transfer immediately to the next bus going to Wisconsin, rather than having the originally scheduled three hour layover, in the Chicago, IL Greyhound station.
.
This happened, because the buses that I traveled on, from KY., were about an hour later than the time they were anticipated to arrive in Cincinnati and Indianapolis.
.
Bob left early for the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Madison, and his pink eyes were examined by two doctors. (Is Bob a rabbit?)   :-)
.
After picking Kathy up at the Madison Racing Dog Station, we had a wonderful lunch with Mary A., at her home, (Don was playing Bridge),and a very stimulating and inspiring afternoon of sharings, inspirations and dream interpretation.
.
A highlight was the three-way interpretation of a very moving dream that Mary experienced at the very peak of her recent severe illness.
.
Three pilgrims on a spiritual journey into Mary's dream.
.
Then a spontaneous plunking into Aldi's in Madison for goodies, and a rainy drive home, to start the wood stove.
.
Bob baked a few taters (Yukon Golds) and mashed them with melted cheese.
.
Yummy.
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Wednesday, 11-21-07
Up in the morning to get that old coffee pot gurgling, and then off to Portage to run errands, then a long and interesting visit with Mom and sister Rose, and a stop at the egg lady's, for another 3 dozen.
.
Back home to get the wood stove going and working on homegrown stir fries with sauteed brown rice.
.
We took the ton of concrete blocks off the 12x20 herb tarp, and harvested the last of the outdoors kale, and potted another big mint plant and brought it into the Sunrise Room.
.
Susan M. arrived for a supper of butternut squash and scalloped Yukon Gold Potatoes, yeller onions, kale, etc.
.
The secret ingredient in the taters was..........creamed cheese!
.
Very, very, tasty.
.
The left overs were mashed up to make potato soup.
.
Hours and hours of kitchen work, prepping for tomorrow's meal, with all three of us, hustling from chore to chore in the kitchen.
.
By midnight, all the little owls began flapping their wings towards their night roosts.
.
A couple of inches of snow has fallen, and so the out-of-doors, is now a Winter Wonderland.   :-)
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Thursday, 11-22-07
Omelets for breakfast, turkey and squash in two ovens, then a morning and early afternoon preparing for the turkey dinner (thank-you, Susan, for bringing the blessed bird), smorgasboard.
.
As we were finishing dinner, baby sister Rita and son, Marshall, arrived, with homemade pecan and pumpkin pies.
.
Leroy called during dessert, and earlier, Loretta, also, Kathy spoke to her mom in Kentucky and her dad in Florida.
.
We had a great and fun-filled four-hour sharing twixt the five of us.
.
Marshall fell in love with Susan's cornbread, and the rest of us fell in love with Rita's pies.
.
Wonderful, wonderfully warm, stories shared by all.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Friday , 11-23-07
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
.
To start the morning with a sausage, onion, mozarella, 5 egg omelet!
.
And then, lots of chores both inside and out.
.
KatKat working on the bedrooms, Bob with the compost, trash, storage in the barn, and several trips for firewood to keep both the woodstoves burning.
.
Turkey vegetable soup simmering on top of the woodstove in the turkey roasting pan.
.
Lots of brown rice, baking in the oven.
.
Water heated on top for dishes, and, a teapot whistling on each woodstove. :-)
.
Susan off to Wisconsin Dells and we two, sitting down to Chef Roberto's turkey vegetable soup. :-)
.
Amy S., a first time visitor from the Madison area, arrived to sample our turkey soup, and we sampled many of the goodies that Amy brought!
.
When Susan returned from her shopping jaunt to Wisconsin Dells, we four sat around the kitchen table till late, sharing stories, and periodially sampling one goodie or another.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Saturday, 11-24-07
Le Roi arrived about 9 a.m. and the five of us shared adventures and foods throughout the morning and afternoon.
.
We were also joined by Loretta, who, along with Amy and Bob, enjoyed a sausage-mozarella omelet that was verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry tasty!
.
Bob had Miss Atlanta (a Vermont Casting woodstove, Atlanta model), burning in the Sunrise Room, when Le Roi arrived.
.
Teri and her three angels arrived in time for lunch and lots of sharings all around, and later, Amy left for home.
.
Duncan arrived in the afternoon and the communion meals and sharings continued.
.
The children, large and small, worked on the kitten and puppy jigsaw puzzles, new uses for the exer-cycle, and nearly everybody spent some time shelling dried pole beans (42 gallons worth!).
.
We began guess-timating, how many dried beans, we shelled out, altogether.
.
To find out the answer, we poured one level cup of dried beans, and counted them with 7year old Andie.
.
A search and recovery team, armed with a flashlight, crawled around the floor and under the table to retrieve quite a large number of wayward beans.
.
We counted one level cup of 586 beans.
.
Sixteen cups then, equals, 9,376 beans!
.
Wow!
.
In addition to playful bean-counting, lots of interesting and inspirational sharings by all, and all 3 children were an absolute delight to be with!
.
We did a wagon and tractor ride around the fields and gardens, and upon returning to the house after a chilly, and sometimes bumpy ride, Bob stopped, got off the tractor and turned to see the 8 passengers, but nobody was there!
.
Neither was the wagon!
.
It had disconnected from the tractor while circling the house and Bob, with his hood on tight, did not hear his former passengers laughing and laughing, and yelling at Bob to come back! :-)
.
This story was retold several times, with increasing amounts of laughter. :-)
.
Many, many, random acts of kindness, and many, many, random acts of eating.
.
And then, along about midnight, Susan headed back to Mt. Horeb, and then the last of the local night owls, fluttered off to bed.
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Sunday, 11-25-07
Le Roi breakfasted early, and then headed for Cascade Mountain, to spend the day working on the ski slopes (where two slopes are open, so far).
.
The seven of us breakfasted, lunched, and shared from the heart, each becoming mentors for all the others.
.
The 3 childen were mesmerized by a video, which told true stories about chickens, from about 8 different points of view, each a verrrrrrrrrrrrrry different, chicken experience. :-)
.
The three of them also had an interesting time, "domesticating" our outside cats.
.
About mid-afternoon, the 5 remaining visiting angels, packed their cars, along with 5# bags of Norland Red and Yukon Gold "taters."
.
Incredibly interesting, and inspirational, sharings, by all!
.
All of it, most, most helpful.
.
And heart-warming. :-)
.
BobKats rested a while, then Bob got up, to go out, and bring wood inside, to roast in the wood stoves.
.
Kathy's Mom Newell called to say that she's home, and getting used to how to find and set things up at home, once again, to be functional.
.
She'll be home for a while, until the health care angels find a place for her to stay, as she becomes stronger, or decides to continue to BE at home, with the help of many Angel aides and physical therapists.
.
We are embraced in the harvest of family and our surrogate family, that goes on and on, with ALL of the Angels, that we are JOY'ned with eternally.
.
Thank you, who sing in the harmony of our ONE family of LOVE!
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Monday, 11-26-07
We welcomed a quiet day at Bumpity Road.
.
Bob split wood, chopping it with an axe at the woodshed, for Miss Monarch Cookstove, and using a Monster Maul at the pole barn, with larger pieces for Miss
Atlanta, who heats the Sunrise Room quite well.
.
Bob finished by carrying 6 steel baskets of wood into the house. Kathy was inside, resting in a day of gratitude.
.
She had the chance to see what messages had come online, and respond to some of those.
.
Thank you God, for giving us these moments to have family come home, and blessed grace filled opportunities, to be still also.
.
A chat with Mama Newell, down in Kentucky, updated her good progress in recovery from her surgery.
.
KAThy's brother Clay has been a godsend for his mother because she still needs help to get to the bathroom.
.
We enJOYed watching a tribute to Carol Burnett, who is a classic of comedy, on public educational television. Her personal stories were very touching and very well told. Carol made us laugh, and laugh, and laugh, which is always soooooo helpful!
.
Bob curled up with Mary Gerard's THE MENTOR WITHIN, and did a bedside reading for KAThy.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Tuesday, November 27, 2007
We relaxed inside for a while again, this morning.
.
Then, were up to seize the joys of living in the sanctuary of peace here with the birds and animals.
.
Bob and Kathy ate a hearty breakfast.
.
Then, Bob went outside to do a few tasks, while KAThy took care of things around the house.
.
We are now inside, to eat, and enJOYing BEing home, to appreciate the pleasures of another quiet day.
.
We got calls from a few friends/family, who are coming here, to be home with us soon, one from Sweden, another, a Canadian, on his way to Canada, and a family of 3 that plan on driving up from Missouri, tomorrow.
.
Bob split and carried another 6 baskets of wood to the house, and also split larger chunks up at the pole barn, and tossed them on the gigantic woodpile in the pole barn.
.
Also had a great chat with Lisa in Pennsylvania, and Loretta in Portage.
.
It is always great, to welcome everyONE here, to their first day of community. Because every day is the first day of what we're experiencing now!
.
Within seconds of pouring warm water in the bird bath, three furry "cat birds" had leaped up on the bird bath, and with amazing agility, balanced themeselves while lapping up the water.
.
Nuthatches and Chickadees, were just a few feet away in an oak tree, decling the three cats' smiling invitation to join them, permanently.
:-)
.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Wednesday, 11-28-07
Waltzin' around with the kitchen woodstove all day, with several trips to the woodshed to bring back baskets of firewood.
.
A relaxing day, with a lot of research about garlic, including over a hundred readers' comments about garlic.
.
And, finally, we called Jung's, and placed an order for four of their garlics, which we hope to plant this year yet.
.
We heard from the potential Missouri visitors, and it looks like they might be leaving St. Louis, tomorrow morning.
.
Loretta stopped by for turkey soup and left a beautifully painted gourd, that her friend Sofia had made for us.
.
Still working on the left-overs.
.
And when I think about our preparing the food, it does remind me of Pogo.
.
Like Pogo says, "We has met the enemy, and they is us."   :-)
.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Thursday, 11-29-07
We tended a very hungry wood fire.
.
We spoke to Winona, in Missouri, Mom Helen, in Portage.
.
We did more garlique exploring online, from mentors, from all over the world. They gave exquisite tips about how to make the beautiful plants breath, to your hearts delight.
.
About 500 hundred comments were submitted in November from all over the universe.
.
Some of them were hilariously funny!
  .
We also talked with Mama Newell, before she and Clay went to Richmond, KY to stay overnight. Then, they'll go to Lexington, KY. tomorrow, to see the angel doctors, who did the surgery on her thigh, to make her able to walk, once again.
.
Friday, 11-30-07
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
We heard the pitty pat of angel feet arriving at Bumpity Road, at 6 am, and whispers in the kitchen.
.
Down we came, to find Wyonna, Patrick, and Justin, arriving in their Missouri buggy.
.
We welcomed them in, and asked if they'd like to have grilled cheese sandwiches, which they enthusiastically agreed to.
.
Kathy showed them their room, and chatted with Wyonna and Justin, while Patrick unloaded the car.
.
They were in their room, and quiet, when Bob and Kathy left to go to Madison.
.
We arrived in Madison, to pick up garlic and onion bulbs from Jung's, stop by Deb and Paul's to deliver potatoes, go by Aldi's, to shop for angel treats.
.
Then, we went over to the Summit Credit Union, to have some questions answered by angel Amy about our accounts there.
.
It is always such a delight to talk with Amy. We appreciate the way that she shares openly about her life.
.
We stopped by the Country Buffet, to eat from the round up of many food items, which are verrrrry delicious.
.
Then, went on to the V.A. Hospital, to meet with Bob's doctor there. He said that Bob is doing well. He is always so very nice to talk with.
.
Then, headed home, for a visit to Mom Helen, and then a very carefull wintry drive to Bumpity Road.
