INTRODUCTION By HAROLD EGELN
Mention UFO reseachers and a number of well-known names come to mind. Hopkins. Mack. Friedman. Jacobs. Vallee. Strieber. Hynek. Keel. Fowler. Randles. Etc. However, not all the best researchers are famous, such as NASA's Paul Hill whose very important work, unknown during his long life, was published in the mid-1990s after his death in "Unconventional Flying Objects."
Some unsung excellent individual researchers, lost in our celebrity-obsessed culture, are humble but filled with valuable new knowledge, experience and insights which the field of Ufology, at large, and the world misses out on; -- that should not happen but be added to the immense pool of knowledge with the known researchers and experiencers of the close encounter matrix.
And from that rich substance intermix stirred together comes a BREAKTHROUGH, a high peak Alpine-like "Eureka!" experience, as once shouted by the alchemists of olden days.
ENTER... DR. REMO ROTH
In the beautiful Swiss city of Zurich we find one of those unheralded hard-working researchers: Dr. Remo Roth, a depth psychologist who was a student of the late famous Marie-Louise von Franz. Dr. Roth has been doing outstanding work for 25 years in this research field, which now is finally attracting some notice here and there.
He contacted us two years ago after stumbling upon the S.P.A.C.E. website and our e-book, now titled the "Project Wonderland Chronicles: The WOW! Signal Contact" marked by its pattern of recurrent synchronicities, which is what caught his attention.
On his own marvelous PsychoVision website, Dr. Roth describes how he was suddenly "plagued by UFO dreams" 25 years ago at the start of 1979, even though he never had a UFO sighting nor stealth close encounter (abduction).
Intriqued by this, he began working with clients who also reported UFO dreams. As his work progressed, Dr. Roth developed what he calls "a psychomatically orientated psychotherapy and depth psychology" which also employs his own creation, the BCI for "Body-Centered Imagination."
"The UFO phenomenon is very real," says Dr. Roth, adding that its source is not necessarily from an advanced technology reflecting the current Space Age high-tech worldview that is the standard model for most top researchers that guides their choice and interpretation of cases. UFO experiences, Dr. Roth says, can be "explained in a very natural manner."
But he notes that it often manifests in "altered states of consciousness," which gave him clues. -- That UFOs and Close Encounters emerge from "an intermediate realm" (a psychophysical and potential state in "always/everywhere") and are an interaction, sometimes very disturbing as reported, between "Eros (wave) and Logos (particle) consciousness," a Yin/Yang (neutrino/antineutrino) dynamic which can lead us to "a real new creation."
Through an understanding of the work over 50 years ago of physicist and Noble laureate Wolfgang Pauli and depth psychologist Dr. Carl Jung, seeking to "unify quantum physics and depth psychology," Dr. Roth arrives at some very intriquing concepts, as he explains fully in the two feature pieces below.
We first published his work in Chapter 13 of the S.P.A.C.E. e-book, -- the chapter titled: "The Decoders Part Two: A New Melody, A New Genesis," relating to our accounts along with an interview by Dr. Roth with myself.
And in our "SPACE Explorers Orbitzine," we published his article, "The UFO and the Subtle Body, Contemporary History and the Future Developments in Nine UFO Dreams" in two parts.
Both of those articles, offering ground-breaking insights which not only concur with much of our own experience but which have also added immeasurable to all that jazz, for which we are grateful, now are placed on a webpage in this new journal (On UFO Dreams and "Contact"), accessed from its table of contents.
A PAIR OF TWO AMAZING ARTICLES
With this June issue of our journal's newsletter, we lead with two breakthrough feature pieces kindly offered to us by Dr. Roth from his thoughtfully amazing PsychoVision website:

*** "The Psychophysical Relationship Between Radioactivity and UFOs."
We will start with the first, which is an interview in May with Dr. Roth by Dennis Kirstein, offering us an exciting inside look into the work of Dr. Roth.
And we then follow that with the second article which gives a unique perspective stemming from the work of Pauli and Jung, and culminating with the emergence of the UFO phenomenon from an intermediate, indeterminate realm (grabbing our attention) and an apocalyptic world crisis.
AN ANTI-NUCLEAR PRELUDE
In 1987, when I worked for the New York City Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy, the local office of a large national peace organization, I was assigned the task of finding a video/film-maker to record the First Global Radiation Victims Conference, to be held for five days at the Roosevelt Hotel here in the city. I was not being successful in finding a filmmaker.
Then, one fine day, a woman walks into the office next to mine, in the same room, telling the staff person for the Performing Artists for Nuclear Disarmament (PAND) that she, "Wendy," wants to do some volunteer work for the cause of peace.
"You won't believe this," said "Wendy" to my neighboring staffer, Barbara Kopit. "I was on the New Jersey shore recently and I suddenly saw a UFO appear over the ocean. It communicated to me, urging me to work for peace by helping to end to the nuclear arms race. And here I am! Do you need me?"
The PAND staffer referred "Wendy" to me -- and SANE finally had its video/film-maker, thanks to an oceanside UFO encounter. It was in June 1987, just before this incident, that I first contacted Budd Hopkins, hoping to explore my possible "UFO encounters." Hopkins did not respond to my request until a year later, in mid-1988.
But the "UFO-nauts" responded first, in a fashion, by fufilling a need relating to anti-nuclear work, apparently part of their interest and study! This relates, albeit in a subtle ambiguous way, to Dr. Roth's "The Psychophysical Relationship Between Radioactivity amd UFOs."

Dreams act as our own internal movie and TV screens, giving inner vision a stage. Accounts of encounter-related dreams and discussion of them have been one of the major aspects of S.P.A.C.E., featured on our main website, Close Encounters of the Dream Kind, and at our support exploration gatherings.
The are the prime focus of researchers such as Swiss depth psychologist Dr. Remo Roth of Zurich. And they were a special in-depth feature report in our print "S.P.A.C.E. Newsletter" of November 1994 (Issue #33) in "The Dream Data Base" in three parts by UFO dream researcher Christine Morciglio. It was part of a series that ran for a few issues.
Three years ago dreams, as related to stealth close encounters, were an integral part of the play "The Abduction Project" produced and performed by the Collision Theory ensemble here in New York City. The ensemble staged their play again recently at the University of California, home of the Jet Proplusion Lab, the mission control center for NASA's space probes such as the current Mars rovers and the Cassini mission to Saturn.
The dream image used in the play was that of the sounds and sights of a mysterious train, with a conductor who was kind of a denizen of an unknown reality which straddled our known reality. The train image came out of pre-play interviews in 2000 with experiencers from S.P.A.C.E.
Experiencers have numerous dreams of trains, sometimes running underground in tunnels, and most times on the ground or even in the air and space, making trains a clue image to stealth close encounters, so we pay attention to them.
A NEW TRAIN DREAM
On the morning of Sunday, May 23 I had a vivid dream which began in an apartment builidng, with two apartment buildings occupied by young friends and the third by me and a roommate, with me exclaiming, "We're finally living in Manhattan!"
The scene quickly switched to a restaurant and pub, which, as I dreamed on, I realized was like an old German beer garden in the park across from a childhood home, where my parents infrequently went, in Irvington, New Jersey.
There I ran into Ed, who has been in S.P.A.C.E. for 10 years and whose hometown is Irvington, not my hometown but the village in New York state by the Hudson River. I told him that I want to give him a book I had, as he held onto some yellow manila folders. But first, in the dream, I had to find a restroom, and after using it and as I left the place, I saw a most unusual train pulling in front of the place.
The "train," more the size of a cihldren's train at kiddie land in an amusement park, was snaking its way in (like the train graphic above). Each small "car" essentially was in a simple open-air box shape without being enclosed or having a top, and containing only one passenger in each car, holding on to the sides of the "boxes." There were no people in the "engine cabin" nor the second car.
Each train car was attached by a single, straight black cord or cable, including the first car with the engine. There were no tracks, and none of the cars had wheels, including the engine cabin.
I was going to sit in the second car, which was empty, and as I placed a large white plastic bag with my belongings into that car, slightly embarrased by it because people might think it was a garbage bag, I then realized (oh-oh) that I had not given Ed the book I promised.
Ed had come running out. "I forgot to give you the book, as I promised," I said. "Sorry, but I will give it to you another time, since it's been packed and I have to catch this train."
I was surprised to see sitting in the first passenger car/box a teenaged boy, who resembled a friend in the past, Raoul. "With that bag in the car, there's no room for you," he said sweetly. "You can ride in the front car, the engine cabin."
I looked at "the front car, the engine cabin." Just like the other train cars, it had no wheels, and was attached to Raoul's car by a stiff black cable or cord.
The engine cabin was of a simple design. The driver seat, with space for three people, was in a box-shaped cabin. The "hood" area in front of that was also a box shape, A horizontal rectangle and a vertical rectangle, like an old box-shaped car.
No one was in the front cabin, so I wondered if I would be "the driver." I then woke up, noting the time -- 7:07 a.m., and wrote about the dream in my notebook and making a rough sketch of "the train." I went back to sleep for a few more hours, and when I did get up, I drew a much better sketch of the "engine cabin" and the "train's cars."
Two days later I actually met the Ed who was in my dream, taking a train from Westchester County to meet me. Later, at a bookstore, he told me of his recent dream, which first involved people standing in a line, a small auditorium and a bench for three people in what we realized was "a waiting room."
The next scene involved a classroom or auditorium, with Ed in one of the seats as someone lectured. On. or by. a wall there was a large screen on an easel, with a gray frame and on each end of the screen, flowers.
Auditorium and classroom dreams are a recurrent image in people who have close encounters or who sighted UFOs... as are, for a number of encounter interfacers, trains. And both Ed and I, as well as others within S.P.A.C.E., have had their share of both auditorium/classroom and train dreams.
Then I told Ed my dream account, as related above, and showed him my drawings. He just happened to have a book on trains on the bookstore cafe table, and he showed me a page with a nighttime photo of an eerie scene of strange lights, which were actually from night work crews on a track. The caption read: "Alert the authorities -- the aliens have landed! No, it's just a rail-grinding team at night."
I then leafed forward in the book and stopped cold in my tracks (pardon the pun!) when I saw a large full-page photo of what I saw two days ago in my dream!!!
It was a photo, (page 100) taken in 1997 of a Canadian "Wooding," a brand name for what is also called a "speeder or hyrail" handcar once used a lot, but not so much now, for track repairs.
The "engine cabin" was a virtual duplicate of what I drew from my dream, both in shape and in the cabin's seat! "How can this be?" I said to Ed.
And, yes, it also had a long, straight black cable or cord attached to an open air, box-shaped platform with maintenance equipment behind it, enough to hold at least one person. I was startled and amazed! -- and showed Ed immedately. How can this be happening!?!?
"A rare Canadian Woodings handcar -- 1997, Matawanberg, Maine," read the photo's caption. "Although relatively rare today, a few Woodngs are still puttering around."
Here was not only a significant train dream, but a PRECOGNITIVE DREAM, a charactetistic which some close encounter dreams have. Examples of such predictive dreams, which are usually highly accurate, were last seen by the mass public two years ago in the movie "The Mothman Prophecies" starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, based on John Keel's famous book.
(Linney, who played a cop in the movie, is now starring in a revival of the Broadway play "Sight Unseen." Which just happens to be the tite of Budd Hopkins' latest book, but on two different topics.)

The word "maintenance" may be a clue here when we analyze these dreams. Perhaps the dream indicates, for example: maintaining contact with an experiencer through dreams or doing "maintenance" on the experiencer while asleep and the dream indicating that function.
Also, the cars on the trains containing one passenger each may indicate other experiencers connected, and that an experiencer may become the train's "driver," taking charge or responsibility for their hers or his experiences.
Close encounter interfacers, such as Ed or myself, may have these train dreams extending back to childhood. I can recall such dreams, which obviously occur in the altered state of sleep consciousness, from my childhood and those over the years since, as if I dreamed them last night.
One early childhood dream (roughly age 7 to 12) was of a steam-locomotive train traveling on tracks that were vertically placed on hills.
What is truly spooky is that virtually all these dreams can be recalled in memory instanenously and simultaneously all at once, as if they are all part of a stored holographic image matrix.
TRAINS IN SPACE MOVIES
In UFO movies there are train and dream references. In the 1951 classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still," young Billy, befriended by Klaatu the friendly space alien ambassador, shows him his toy model train set, which he has pulled from, significantly, under his bed, the cot of our dreamworld and launch pad for many stealth encounters.
In the 1954 movie "Invaders From Mars," which involve implants placed by a hostile Martians into human necks to control them, a boy sees a flying saucer land near his backyard, starting the movie's plot. At the end, it seems as if it were all a dream, thus connecting UFOs and dreams... back in 1954.
In the 1976 movie "The Man Who Fell To Earth" starrng David Bowie (who has had an interest in UFOs and the space program since he was a teen when he printed his own UFO newsletter), there are scenes, interspersed throughout the movie when he is on Earth, of his family's "train home," a single cabin-like car which runs on rails, apparently by wind or solar power.
OTHER TRAIN IMAGE SOURCES
In British UFO researcher Jenny Randles' 1995 book "Star Children: The True Story of Alien Offspring Among Us" about UFO exeriencers who feel that have a dual human-alien idenity, she tells of such a person, "Gary the alien," who was taken by her late in 1975 to visit a famous scientist in London who developed an idea for train which rides over a magnetic rail, floating just above it.
While Gary's story about his alien-human identity seemed "absurd" to Randles, she said: "But there are secret corners to his experience that have made me sit up and take notice."
So, when she and Gary went to London 28 years ago, Randles said that she "was amazed to discover that said professor wasunfazed by Gary's 'true confession.' Indeed the scientist candidly told us he had met an alien before and even felt that his pioneering work in propulsion sytem physics might well be guided by extraterrestrial hands!" The scientist tells Randles that it must remain a secret.
The scientist died in the 1990s. The man with the dual alien-human identity is "Gary H.", a prime figure and writer in our "Project Wonderland Chronicles" e-book whose "WOW!" insight in June 2000 help create a breakthrough.
Whitley Strieber, in one of his UFO books, relates a story of a train ride as a child in which a stealth close encounter may have occurred.
Most recently, in "Steve Spielberg Presents TAKEN," the network cable TV mini-series on the Sci Fi Channel first shown in December 2002, there is a key scene in which an abduction takes place on a train, with the boxcar in the scene shown momentarily high above the tracks.
There is also in the highly popular Harry Potter book and movie series the "Hogswart Express Train" accessible only for young wizards from an inter-dimensional portal in the London train station. And there's "The Polar Express" children's book (coming out as a movie this November) about a mysterious train which connects with the home of Santa Claus at North Pole.
There are numerous exellcent studies, books and websites on dreams, with one in particular, "The Dreaming Universe: A Mind Expanding Journey Into the Dream Where Psyche and Physics Meet," a book by physicist Fred Alan Wolf published in 1994 by Simon and Schuster.

TRACKING IT ALL DOWN
And so it goes, chugging on, toot-toot, clackity-clackity into the mysterious night-world of close encounters....
Trains, especially model toy train sets, continue to fascinate young and old alike, whether they involve UFOs or not. And they play a role in close encounter experiences and dreams, perhaps as a screen memory or image, or an archetype, similiar the "the rabbit" in our "WOW! Contact."
The late actor Paul Tripp in the 1950s had a popular TV show called "Mister I. Magination" in which he boarded an amusement park type train, donning an engineer's hat in the engine. He drove the train through a tunnel (a recurent image in encounter dreams and recalls) and into a set, a fun world of the imagination, where the show took place.
In 1990, pre-S.P.A.C.E. but doing UFO research myself, I visited a young couple on Long Island who had been having stealth close encounters, along with their young boy, who was no more than three.
Of course, I did not question nor test the boy myself, which is not cool. But while in the couple's living room, the boy brought out a plastic train set, without tracks, and sat on the carpet, playing with it. "This is how they come to take me. In trains," he said, moving the toy train, when his his parents asked him about the family's "visitors."
Who drives the trains of our close encounter dreams? Who drives the UFOs? Who drives the dream?

.... A TRAIN STATION by a park and a river has been the setting for dreams giving clues to close encounters.

The mass media in the U.S. routinely censors UFO news -- the most important story of human history -- mostly by a mindset that ignores the topic. A recent example is the Mexican Air Force disclosure of an incident involving its jet fighters and mysterious objects they encountered. However, here in New York City, to its credit, the "Daily News" ran two up-front stories, one on page two, each presenting the pros and cons on the case, with the end result being a "swamp gas in the air" alibei.
The newspaper where I work, now on a part-time basis due to cutbacks, has sat on my "Brooklyn In Orbit Over UFOs" article since late March, not publishing it, especially after a respectable co-worker complained about it to my boss, the editor and publisher.
However, there is the freedom of the Internet, with this journal and our other S.P.A.C.E. publications and websites freely available. Some of our news items and reports are accepted by other UFO news sites, such as UFO City.com,, honoring freedom of the press, while others, such as prominent sites which I will not mention because of the high respect I have for them, deliberately ignore them for unknown reasons, which is their perogative.
Within certain quarters of Ufology there is a degree of self-censorship, either because some of the material is simply too far-out of line and bizarre within acceptable reason or because of the need to guard information used to gage the worth and accuracy of cases that comes into light.
There is an ethos of trusting "experts" and "authorities" within and outside of the media and, to a degree, within Ufology. The information of well-known researchers, doing wonderful, hard earned work within their own self-imposed guidelines and worldview frameworks, is often placed ahead of the direct experience, rather than on an equal par, offered by those of us who directly interface with the UFO phenomenon, such as many of us who have been living this experience, many since early childhood.
We who actually live through and endure the Close Encounter experience know, more than any others, the demands of self-censorship in dealing with family, friends, co-workers and society, and being censored in a variety of ways when we dare to speak up, "disturbing the universe" as a famous poet once said.
CENSORSHIP'S CONSEQUENCES
I can never forget being locked alone, at age 13, in a school principal's office in Irvington, NJ, while my reports of UFOs were dismissed before all my classmates (shortly before entralled by the sightings I reported to them) at a special emergency assembly program.
Subsequently I was suspended from school as punishment for sharing my observations with my intensely curious classmates (who surprized me with their interest!). I was then referred to a school psychologist, facililating the disposal of my space, astronomy and UFO books into the trash, with the grounding of my career ambitions of becoming an astronomer, and forcing me to learn sports against my will (which I successfully resisted).
At age 13, to deal with that trauma, for that part of me which was denied and deliberately supressed (and with no one around to care about my trauma), I placed it into kind of a silent "Peter Pan Persona" dwelling in a "Never-Neverland" inside a hidden closet in my psyche.
In my lonely, unshared moments, all I had to do was to travel, in my mind and heart, "second star to the right and straight on till morning," to retrieve the Wonder of my UFO sightings dismissed by adults as a boy, whose shadow, like Peter Pan's, remained in this world, -- and to quietly read about astronomy, the space program and flying saucers, ever-mindful to remain silent about the latter.
And my experience is just but one example of the experiences of countless others.
THE RISKS OF SPEAKING-OUT
But now, making our shadowy lives come alive, I and others are speaking out, supported by the mixed-bag counter-culture of Ufology, while bucking the mass media barrier of both imposed and self-censorship.
EVERY TIME we take that risk of telling our stories, whatever the nature of our experience with its variety and seemingly high strangeness, the truth in us can become stronger, giving us the will to persist rather than desist, no matter what the obstacles and their source.
Having said that, I recently came across a news feature about what is at the heart of the problem of the degrees of censorship, and the measures of denial, in our society and within ourselves, illustrating the problem stated here independent of S.P.A.C.E. or any other UFO source by a mainstream news story:

Celebrating its 100th issue is the "Brazil UFO Magazine," shown here and published since 1985, one of the longest continuosly published UFO magazines on Earth. The magazine and its editor A. J. Gevaerd also launched a Freedom of Information Disclosure Campaign on April 15, 2004 for the Brazilian government to come clean on what it knows about UFOs.
The magazine and the Brazilian Commission of UFO Researchers, the coordinating network for the nation's UFO researchers and groups, is waging the campaign, which includes petitions, educational forums and endorsements from researchers worldwide. (Our Journal Editor Harold Egeln has given his backing.)
The 100th issue features a cover story on an alleged UFO crash with occupants January 26, 1996 in Varginah in Brazil. There will be a cable TV show on MNN- Manhattan Neighborhood Network public access digital cable television on Channel 67 on AUGUST 4, 2004 at 5:30 p.m. about S.P.A.C.E., the Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters, and repeated on Wednesday, AUGUST 11 at 5:30 p.m.
"The Meaning of Contact" is the topic on a half-hour show called "Uniquely You Now" hosted by longtime MNN cable TV host Mae Eisenberg. It is a repat of the first of two parts, originally shown on May 2 and May 9.
The second part, "Empowering UFO Experiencers," was shown on June 2 and June 9.
Both parts also feature "Welcome Home: The Story of S.P.A.C.E.", an eight-minute documentary by NYU Film student Blake Gingerich showing a small-support group discussion with four members of S.P.A.C.E., along with an interview by Eisenberg of Harold Egeln of S.P.A.C.E.
In March, another MNN show, "New Realities" hosted by Alan Steinfeld, re-broadcasted a show with S.P.A.C.E. members, including S.P.A.C.E. columnist Alan White, first shown a few years ago.
On February 2 Egeln, who is also vice president of The New York Space Society, the local chapter of the National Space Society, a grassroots pro-human space travel organization, was one of two guests on "Astronomy Forum," an hour-long live on-air monthly science program on Staten Island Island public access cable TV hosted by astronomy teacher Karl Hricko and producer Pat Brady. The topic was "Our Place in Space" about the new U.S. Space Commission for the Moon, Mars and Beyond. The commission held public hearings in NYC on May 4-5 at the Asia Society.
