CLOSE ENCOUNTERS NYC-NEWS -- Summer (July-August) 2007 Edition featuring New UFO Books

"THEY KNOW US BETTER THAN WE KNOW OURSELVES: THE HISTORY & POLITICS OF ALIEN ABDUCTIONS" by BRIDGET BROWN, Ph D., NYU PRESS

After an extensive research project of close encounter witnesses, a new academic-published book on the historical and political dimensions of the culture of contact and UFO encounters by independent scholar Bridget Brown, Ph D. (American studies), "They Know Us Better Than We Know Ourselves: The History and Politics of Alien Abductions" was released by NYU Press on August 1, 2007. The book is available in both hardcover and paperback editions. Visit the link below for further details. -- "Drawn from interviews with alleged abductees from the New York area, Bridget Bown suggests a new way for people to think about the alien phenomenon, one that is concerned not with whether aliens actually exist, but with the understanding that belief in aliens may tell us about our changing understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.... The alien abduction phenomenon helps us think about how people feel left out and create their own stories and fashion truths that square with their own experience of the world." [excerpt of book blurb]

Culture of Contact Historical Note: Brown's book is based on her Master Thesis/dissertation at NYU. The very first Master Thesis on the UFO subject was in 1950 - 57 years ago! - by Journalism Professor Dewayne B. Johnson of California State University, Northridge, an award-winning journalist who was a Los Angeles Times desk editor, who later shared a Pulitizer Prise on coverage of LA riots. His thesis was published as "Flying Saucers: Fact of Fiction?" in part two of his book "Space: A Journalist's Notebook" in 1950. The UFO section was republished in 1998 by Adventures Unlimited Press as "Flying Saucers Over Los Angeles" with additional material. A quarter of a century later, Dr. David Jacobs' dissertation was published as a book in 1975 as "The UFO Controversy in America."

BROWN'S BOOK MARRED BY BLATANT ERRORS

Brown's book, spurred by a sincere source and giving a mostly fair accounting of S.P,A,C.E.'s activities,, has several quotes and observations that are basically accurate.

BUT there are serious glaring errors resulting in totally false impressions. An appaling example is her distorted and squewed claim that journalist Harold Egeln's environmental work and writings spring solely from alien contact and its message. Nothing could be further from the truth and Brown's conclusion ignores Egeln's own innate interest and intelligence, totally apart from alien contact influences, about the subject of ecology and threats to the Earth's sustainability from excessive human interference.

ROSWELL REDEUX: CASE CLOSED AT LAST!? -- "WITNESS TO ROSWELL"

Is this the last word on the famed Roswell Incident -- the real "Case Closed"? HAROLD D. SALKIN, LONG-TIME UFO INVESTIGATOR, DIES AT 87

By HAROLD EGELN

New York City, NY, July 13, 2007 -- Harold D. Salkin, a longtime UFO investigator and a pioneer in the early days of the Modern UFO Era, died on at a home on Long Island today. He was 87.

His passing was announced here by author and rock musicologist Michael Luckman, Director, New York Center for Extraterrestrial Research. "My good friend and longtime colleague, Harold D. Salkin, who had been the world's oldest living UFO researcher, passed away at a home on Long Island earlier today. Harold Salkin, 87, played an active role in NICAP's early days. He was truly one of a kind and will be sorely missed."

In his recent book, "Alien Rock: The Rock 'n' Roll Extraterrestrial Connection," Luckman dedicated the book to both his mother and Salkin. Salkin, who was widely respected in the UFO community, had done much work with Luckman for many years, helping with Luckman's UFO UFO conferences, events and press conferences, along with UFO journalist Antonio Huneeus and UFO artist John Sheldon.

As mentioned, Salkin was a pioneer in Ufology, taking part in the the National Investigatios Committee for Aerial Phenonmena (NICAP) when it started in the late 1950s. He also knew and did some work with contactee George Adamski when he was in the city.

In the early 1970s, Timothy Green Beckley founded the "UFO Investigators League (UFOIL), and he produced with Salkin the "UFO Investigators Leaque Field Manual" in 1979 (updated in 1992). The UFOIL was part of the national Coalition of Concerned Ufologists, with chapters in several states in the 1970s.

As a UFO journalist, Harold Salkin wrote several articles for Beckley's "UFO Universe" including an article entitled "George Adamski: Cosmic Saint Or Sinner?"

NY POST ARTICLE ON J. ANTONIO HUNEEUS's ATTEMPT TO GET BACK HIS UFO ARCHIVES

Sunday, July 1, 2007, New York City, NY -- Under the banner headline "UFO 'alien'ation suit -- 'Give me back my space junk'" today's New York Post (page 15) has an Exclusive article by James Fanelli on longtime, world-famous UFO journalist J. Antonio Huneeus's suit to reclaim scores of boxes of his research material that a woman's son in Staten Island acquired at an auction when the storage firm which had stored his archives, after he moved out of the city, sold them at an auction when it said its rent went unpaid.

The lawsuit to reclaim the 160 boxes of his valuable UFO archives was filed by Huneeus in a Staten Island court on June 5, according to the article, which details the case and allegations. It also notes: "The Chilean-born journalist said he once had a close encounter in the Andes when he saw lights flashing in the sky."

Huneeus, who was at all three days of the "UFOs: The Cutture of Contact (1947-2007) MultiMedia Festival" last weekend and gave a riveting presentation on the latest in UFO reports in South America at the Festival's "Secret School Sunday" Conference, moved out of NYC a few years ago after many years here.

His presentations are a popular feature at conferences throughout the world, including here in the city, USA, Europe, Chile and in many other places. His articles and columns have appeared in countless UFO publications, as well as in a NYC newspaper for a few years. Of the two photos in the Post article, there is one of a smiling Huneeus, who has been active in Ufology for 30 years.

NEW WITNESS SUPPORT ORGANIZATION FOUNDED: Institute for Research on Extraordinary Experiences - INREES

NYC and Paris share many connections, and now we have a new one: INREES - the Institute for Research on Extraordinary Experiences in support of close encounter witnesses. The announcement from journalist Stephane Allix, one of the founders, reads:

PARIS, July 23, 2007 -- "I'm very happy to announce the creation of the Institute for Research on Extraordinary Experiences, INREES, here in France. After years of thinking, I decided to found INREES, and asked my friend, Dr. Bernard Castells, to join in. IREES is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the study of currently unexplainable human experiences. We welcome support and encouragement. Please visit our web site at www.inrees.com," said Stephane Allix.

Allix is known as the producer of a documentary movie, "Experiencers," about Dr. John Mack, the late founder and leader of PEER, the Program for Extraordinary Experiencer Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and experiencers Dr, Mack worked with. INREES appears to be in the same mode as PEER (now the John E. Mack Institute) in its mission, approach and operation.

The "Experiencers" movie includes interviews with close encounter witnesses, including New Yorkers Michael Mannion, who spoke at the "UFOs: The Culture of Contact" in NYC in June, and Trish Corbett (Mannion and Corbett of The Mindshift Institute). They first met Allix at the first annual "Cosmos & Consciousness" Seminar in Rangeley. Maine. At the fourth annual seminar last year, Allix and his wife, Natacha Calestreme, spoke on "The Transformtive Impact of New Knowledge."

Members of the INREES Support Committee include: astronaut Jean-Francis Clervoy; psychiatrist and writer Dr. Patrick Lemoine; psychiatrist Dr. Stanislav Grof; neuroscientist Mario Beauegard; emertitus professor of psychology Kenneth Ring; Apollo 14 lunar astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Founder of IONS; and natural and social scientist Paul Bernstein.

"We welcome the creation of this serious, scientific and supportive organization, and congratulate the founders of INREES for their courage, vision and mission," said NYC journalist Harold Egeln, Founder and Director of S.P.A.C.E. (Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters).

Allix is also the author of "Extraterrestrials: An Investigation" published in France in October 2006, a book available in French. Of INREES's purpose, Allix said in his website statement, "Through a methodically rigorous scientific approach, it is possible to explore the narratives of experiencers and to learn from them."

To contact INREES for more information and to give support, email professionnels@inrees.com. The institute's address is: INREES, Professional Department, 67 rue Saint-Jacques, 75005 Paris - FRANCE.

A MID-SUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM... "DREAMSPACE EXPLORER"

The "Dreamspace Explorer" is an online journal from S.P.A.C.E. which documents dream accounts of close encounter witnesses and associates.

"The active exploration of dreams provides an insightful window into the daunting close encounter experience through the inner space of sleep, tuning into possible memories and current experiences, as well as suggesting interactive contacts with an enigma," said Harold Egeln of S.P.A.C.E. "The study of 'Dream-Space,' which often involve shared dreams and actual close encounters and UFO sightings, may offer tantalizing and compelling clues from which we can learn and maybe move forward with our encounters."

A choice dreams selection is online, continuing reports of CE-Dreams in "Close Encounters of the Dream Kind" on the main S.P.A.C.E. Website and in its e-publications. The most recent dreams also involve a timely sighting and other intriquing incidents in late July 2007. Visit the website at http://community.webtv.net/ValSpegeln/DREAMSPACEEXPLORER to read more!
