Herbert Gerwig

Herbert Alan Gerwig had a glare that could ignite wrestling fans into a frenzy as he marched into the ring during one of his appearances as Killer Karl Kox.He was a headliner at the Dallas Sportatorium when Riverfront Boulevard was still known as Industrial. Later in his 26-year career, his act played well in Japan, and even better in Australia.
After he retired from wrestling in 1982, Mr. Gerwig used his stare to keep inmates in line at the Dallas County Jail. Mr. Gerwig, 80, died Nov. 10 at UT Southwestern Medical Center of complications of an Oct. 20 heart attack.A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jeter & Son Funeral Home, 4830 W. Illinois Ave. in Dallas. He walk into the Sportatorium and the people would go absolutely hysterical, said longtime sportscaster Bill Mercer. He just had that look. He did not have to do anything but look at them. He could just destroy a place without doing much. Born in Baltimore, Mr. Gerwig served in the Marines during the Korean War. He fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, but rarely could speak about it, said Mr. Mercer, a friend of 50 years. On one occasion, when Mr. Mercer tried to get his friend to recall the frigid battle for a film crew, the wrestler broke down and cried. He said, I just dont want to talk about and remember those frozen American bodies I had to stack up on a Jeep, Mr. Mercer recalled. After the war, Mr. Gerwig worked in construction and played semi-pro football, hockey and softball in Cleveland before entering the ring. He was quite an athlete, and he could just do anything, Mr. Mercer said. Gentleman Fred Bozak taught Mr. Gerwig the ropes after introducing him in the ring by tossing him into a match with Ruffy Silverstein, an old pro. Mr. Gerwig was just 23 at the time. After he got beaten badly, Mr. Mercer said, Killer decided he had to go study it and practice. A wrestling promoter in Omaha decided fans would not pay attention to a Gerwig in the ring and dubbed the young wrestler Killer Carl Cox. When Killer moved to Amarillo, he changed it to KKK, and thats when it really took off, Mr. Mercer said. In the 1960s, Mr. Gerwig moved to Dallas, where he wanted his first child to be born, said his wife, Lynda Gerwig of Dallas. He lived in Amarillo and he just liked Texas, she said. Mr. Gerwig had a basic, twisted sense of humor that he did not restrict to the ring. One of his bar pranks " popular in Japan" was to tell a waitress he had dropped his glass eye into his beer, Mr. Mercer said. He would then pour the beer out and fish out a marble, which he would pretend to put back in place. After his wrestling career, Mr. Gerwig was a jail guard for the Dallas County Sheriff Department. He was tough as nails, Mr. Mercer said. He said he didnt have any trouble up there, his friend recalled. He would ask them, You know why you're wearing blue and I'm wearing white? And they would say No,Because they haven't caught me yet, he'd reply. Mr. Gerwig retired in 1994. In addition to his wife, Mr. Gerwig is survived by his four sons, Dr. Wayson Gerwig of Lubbock, and Steven Glen Ball, Cody Gerwig and Herb Gerwig Jr., all of Dallas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

(Manager) Gary Hart with Johnny Wicker before the match

Gary Hart started out as a wrestler in 1963 in the Illinois and Wisconsin territories. In the late 1960's, he became a manager called "Playboy" Gary Hart. Gary Hart became the booker for World Class Championship Wrestling in 1979, a position he would hold until 1987. Gary Hart is largely credited (alongside Bill Mercer, Fritz and David Von Erich) with the success of WCCW, as 1982-1985 are largely considered to be the "Golden Years" of the promotion. Hart created the classic feud between the Von Erichs and the Fabulous Freebirds, as well as introducing memorable characters like the Great Kabuki, Great Muta, King Kong Bundy, the One Man Gang and the Samoan Swat Team. Hart additionally discovered talent such as Gino Hernandez and Chris Adams. Along with booking, he also managed Nord the Barbarian, Abdullah The Butcher, Al Perez and Jeep Swenson under the stable "New Age Management", and always feuded with the top faces of the promotion. In 1984, Hart managed Gentleman Chris Adams, who turned heel and engaged in a major feud with Kevin and Kerry Von Erich. As a result, Adams was propelled to the top of the wrestling world and eventually won the NWA American title in 1985.
Shortly after the folding of WCCW, Hart continued to manage Al Perez in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA)'s Jim Crockett Promotions in 1987, along with Larry Zbyszko. In 1989, he managed the stable J-Tex Corporation, which included Terry Funk, Dick Slater, Buzz Sawyer, The Dragonmaster, and The Great Muta. They feuded primarily with Ric Flair and Sting, but Ole and Arn Anderson later teamed up with Flair and Sting to even the sides up (and thus bringing back The Four Horseman briefly). J-Tex disbanded in early 1990.
During the 1990s, following the demise of the Global Wrestling Federation, Hart and Chris Adams were involved in many Texas-based wrestling promotions, including an ill-fated attempt to revive World Class (billed as World Class II: The Next Generation) at the Dallas Sportatorium. Hart retired in 1999, but made a surprise return in Major League Wrestling, during the promotion's Reloaded Tour on January 9-10, 2004. He appeared following the main event (on January 9th) pitting Low-Ki against Homicide, where the three laid out several wrestlers from the locker room, as well as MLW president (and nephew of Hart's) Court Bauer. Also during the tour, Hart's son Chad (who was trained by Chris Adams, Skandor Akbar and Gary Hart) debuted and wrestled on both events. On January 10, Hart attacked Terry Funk immediately after his barbed-wire "I Quit" match with Steve Corino. It would prove to be MLW's final show, as the promotion folded in February of the same year.
