SARGENT GEORGE ARTHUR RUIZ ROJAS

BIOGRAPHY

Jorge Arturo Ruiz Rojas, born in Havana, Cuba January 21, 1945.In Havana, he went to the Escuelas Pias de la Habana. Arrived on Spt. 1960 to the city of Philadelphia, Pa. to study at Saint Edward's Catholic School. On July 1961 he arrived at Miami, Fl. to live with his brother Carlos. One month later their parents arrived from Cuba. In Miami he study at Ada Merrit School. Living Hight School in April 8, 1963 to joined the U.S.ARMY. He received Basic Training in Fort Jackson, S.C. with UNIDADES CUBANAS, tranfer to Fort Lewis, Washington on 9/63 to 6/64, Germany USAREUR (HD) 7/64 to 5/66. In summer of 1966 request to be send to Viet-Nam with the 1st Cav. Div. finish one year and ask to be send again with Co D 2nd Bn 8th Cav. Div. (AIRMOBILE) USARPAC. During a battle he rescued 3 soldiers from an ambush, winning the Silver Star medal. Participated in Cholon, Saigon, Bien Hoa, An Khe, Cam Ranh Bay, Ia Drang Valley, Plei Me & Tuy Hoa, battles. Advancing on the enemy was wounded on Oct 3, 1967 at Tuy Hoa, Viet-Nam. Taked to Field Hospital to Evacuation Hospital to Japon Hopital (249th Gen. Hosp.) to Fort Gordon Hospital, Ga. DECORATIONS: Silver Star Medal, 2 Purple Heart Medal, Air Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Campaign Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 device , National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award) 2 overseas Service Bars, Sharpshooter Badge (M14), Expert Badge (M16). Discharged at Fort Campbell, Ky on Oct 30, 1972 received permanent disability. He passed away Oct. 11, 1989 a VAMC , Miami, Fl.
