NEW JERSEY Division of DD---Circular #34--Issued l999

Behavior Modification Programming in New Jersey

Re: Page 8 of Division Circular #34-----Level I "Strategy": Medical certification may be required ("Under some circumstances, an individual's medical and or physical condition may be adversely affected by a particular intervention"). [but] NO INFORMED CONSENT REQUIRED for "Level I" [why are parents rights to informed consent missing here but the intervention can be risky enough to require a medical clearance??] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Level II "Strategy": Medical Certification may be required. NO INFORMED CONSENT REQUIRED.

"PHYSICAL PROMPTS"

Unwanted touching may quickly if not immediately lead to a frightened disabled child defending himself. His natural self-defense reaction can then justify level II "strategies." And then his increased panic and symptoms at level II can lead to Level III Aversives-----Lemon Juice, Ammonia capsules (child is forced to inhale these!), Water mist in the face, ETC. ---Only God and the power brokers holding the "Manuals" know
what is hiding in the ETC. on page 10. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We CAN read in David Holmes' (darling of the "Autism Society") book some of the strategies he uses in NJ: "hand, arm, finger squeeze, neck prompt, hair tug, lip tap, slaps, cheek flick, rubber band snap, upper arm or cheek squeeze, tepid shower, ammonia inhalant."

HAUNTED MUSEUM OF EUPHEMISMS---WHAT WOULD HONEST ABE SAY?

"One author discusses this tendency to use language that 'whitewashes' the truth...." (A Call to Action, Tash, p.13)

Example from NJ---"RESTRICTIVE" procedure ---"Any highly restrictive procedure not specifically listed such as "electric shock, contingent slapping, automated vapor spray, etc....."
