Faux Fossil Rock

The color is a little off, but this page is on technique not color.

Simple Tools

Joint Compound Approx. $8.00
Mud Tray $4.00
6 inch knife $5.00
Stomp or Stipple Brush $10.00

Stipple Brush

If you plan to do a ceiling it usually has a hole in the handle for adding a pole.

Just load the mud on the brush straight out of the bucket.

Stipple

Apply the mud with the brush as even as you can. Don't fret too much you can remove what you don't like and redo it. The mud stays wet enough to easily remove for an hour or so.

Knock Down

With your 6 inch knife knock the stipples down, by lightly dragging the knife across the mud.

Clean The Knife

After each time you drag the knife to knock the stipple down use the mud tray to scrape the excess mud off the knife.

Keep Going

Just overlap a bit when you start your next section.
To start with try working a two foot square area at a time.

Ready to Paint

Allow to dry for a day and it is ready to prime and paint. This finish looks a lot like fossil stone. Sometimes its called Lace, because of the design in the holes between the knock down.
