THE FOUR HORSEMEN (work notes)

Okay, I was taking a little vacation from writing (not on purpose at first, but then...), until this past Friday when I was talking to a friend of mine at work and he asked what I was working on currently. Not wanting to say nothing, I mentioned my work entitled: THE FOUR HORSEMEN (I might be thinking of a title change here). It's a baseball movie, but since I'm not as much in love with the game as I used to be, I didn't expect to come to this one so quickly. But I happened to start talking about the not ready for prime time script and got so enthusiastic talking about it that I'm prepared to give it a shot.

As of today, I'm just re reading the script, but I hope to get into the re writing and polishing in a day or two.

Let's play ball!

-------------------- Saturday August 25, 4:54 P.M. EST.

I wish I can say that I've gotten more work done on this project than I have at this point, but I can't. I am getting some work done, more so now than earlier, so that's good. In the past two weeks, I have gotten most of the approximately twenty five pages that I now have written done in this time. I still am nowhere near where I should be after three months of work, but I'm having fun with this project anyways, so who cares.

As I write this script so far, I'm kind of worried about one thing though - this is a baseball movie all the way - but I'm afraid that I am writing too much baseball and not enough story. But, as of now I'm not really worried about that because this is a story whose main focus is baseball and the dreams of four childhood buddies of playing professional baseball.

Next time I update, I hope to have a lot more done and then I'll be able to see if I'm too baseball heavy or not.

-------------------- Saturday December 1, 3:46 A.M. EST.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I haven't done any work on this project since my last update... That is, until now, it's not much, I mean, I still probably have a little more than half of this script to polish, but I'm about fifty eight pages in on this script with approximately seventy more pages to go (Yeah, I see this script reaching 130 pages easy). After all I see it as a baseball epic. As I said earlier in these updates, the script is the story of four childhood buddies who attempt to realize a dream of playing major league baseball for the same team. The story starts in little league and follows the "Horsemen", all the way from there to....

In my last update I said I was worried about the script being too baseball heavy, well I have a few responses for that: (a) I don't think it is, and, (b) If it is, who gives a crap.

Just a little update here. I'm pretty much rolling now on this project. I can actually see this draft being finished in a couple of weeks (less if I take the week off from work that I'm considering).

I'm 95 1/2 hand written pages in, with approximately 46 pages to go. That would give me 141 pages of hand written text. When I actually type the pages up that 141 page count will come down by about 15 pages. I'm kind of worried about the page count being too high, even though I'm prepared to deal with a 120 plus page script.

Anyway, enough of all of the page count mumble jumble. I'm having a lot of fun with this polish job. The script is an ensemble piece with four main characters. Only in the very beginning of the script and the very end of the script are the four main characters in the same place at the same time. Which leads to a lot of scenes where we jump from one part of the country to the other. I hope I'm pulling that off as well as I am intending to.

Things are rolling along pretty well right now. I have just finished the first draft and I think I have something pretty cool in the works here.

As we speak, I am in the process of typing the script up.

I can't believe that I haven't got more to say here, but I don't. More later.

All that epic screenplay talk, was just that, talk. I'm 66 pages of typed screenplay in on this script, and I've already lost 23 pages of hand written script. That's cool, though, because now I've gotten past all of my page count drama and I can concentrate on keeping the script tight.

Earlier in these updates I mentioned that I was surprised to come to this script so soon because of my lost love for the game of baseball, but it's not interfering with me telling this story. In fact the fact that I don't love the game of baseball as much as I did when I first wrote this script and that I'm enjoying this rewrite immensely makes me believe I have something pretty good going on here.

I am, however, worried that there may not be enough actual tension in this script. I mean there are moments of tension but all of those moments have to deal with the game of baseball. I've resigned myself to the fact that this script is an homage to the game of baseball, the game that I loved so much when I decided to write this thing in the first place.

------------------------- Friday April 5, 2002 11:24 P.M. EST.

It's done.

It took forever, until I actually started writing it, that is.

The script didn't end up as long as I had thought it would before I started typing it up, but it does come in at a very strong 114 pages. If I'm not mistaken it ends up my second longest script.

I am concerned, however with my synopsis for this script. The logline for the script is pretty simple: "Four childhood buddies realise a dream of playing baseball in the major leagues together". But, as far as a synopsis is concerned, I'm struggling with how to set up the synopsis. But, I know I will work something out, but right now I'm struggling with it.

Finally, I don't know if this is good or bad, but during these updates on this script, I didn't talk too much about the actual script. Just a whole bunch of page count and talk of my of lost love for the game of baseball.
