This year my mother went alone
She set up her lawn chair at Macintyre Circle
Just where the road was closed to automobile traffic
Watched the parade led by Peter Fonda and Eveil Knevils' son
seventyfive. The same age as the the Rally and Gypsy Motor Tour
When I was a kid my dad would take me
to the basement of the fire station to
see all the impounded bikes. In those days
the road came right by the Village Store.
Big beer business.
The State Troopers must have made the arrest
We only had a police Chief and Tim
Landroches' dad was a part time cop
My parents used to go to the Area
and sit with me and and the other volunteer firemen
on the truck and wait for the drag racers
to catch fire. That's what they did.
Some of the locals tried it too. They'd lay
down two stripes of gasoline, light 'em,
and try to race the fire down the middle.
I saw the real races too. Winding, screaming
around the roads at the campsites. We made
my deaf grandmother stand at the fence.
Just about blew her over when they
came!
They called it off in '63' and I
think it was the year of the riot.
Our very own motorcycle riot!
We'd driven through a few hours before
I'd held my new kitten up to the window
to wave.
A VW bug. A few hours later they were
burning cars
The National Guard couldn't get into
Weirs Beach, that narrow road. The bikes
took the hill climebs fast out. I'm
not sure how they started the races
again. Sled dogs and motorcycles.
That's what Laconia had and it was a
Musher built the racetrack. Seats about
100,000. Mostly they use it for NASCAR.
But they built it for motorcycles. Hells Angels
bought land nearby, 'cause nobody
wanted to rent to them.I haven't been
up there much since high school, but I
did go in '87' when my mother had her
second heart attack.
Took my baby son. She was mad 'cause
they'ed kicked her out of ICU to make room-
all the 'motor vehicle' accidents and
shootings and fights and overdoses and
the occasional guy that blew himself up
playing with a grenade
She wanted to see the show. Maybe
park a wheelchair down in the ER. Her
doctors said no, but we took her sister
and sat in the parking lot of Macdonald's
t watch it go by. About forty roared up
to the space beside us and a guy walked
over
leather leater,muscle muscle, bald head
like the Humugus in Road Warrior, tapped on
the window
I was too shook to not to roll it down
"J'espere qu on n'a pas revielle le bebe"
I'd forgotton how many come from Quebec
