Isn't love grand? Well, sometimes... but not always.
The vast majority of songs that are written are love songs. I've written a few of them myself. But even though I have written "I love you and you love me and flowers bloom in the spring tra la la" sort of songs I prefer to write torch songs.
What is a torch song? I have been asked. A torch can be a song of love that never happened or love gone wrong. Torch songs can fall into a number of different categories.
There is the "yearning" sort of torch song. You're in love or you "think" you're in love. Whatever the case, you haven't become involved with the object of your affection. You worship them from afar. Will they ever notice you? Will they ever return your love? Sigh....
Then there is the "hurting, aching" type of torch song. You've won and lost your love. It's over for them but it's not over for you. You are carrying a torch for them and the flame could light up the night sky that you toss and turn in. It's the middle of the night. Your arms are empty and you hurt because you want them to be there beside you. You are haunted. Your heart is on fire. You ache. You bleed inside. They have left you behind. They are indifferent or disdainful. You are crying in your soul. If they would only love you once again..... then everything would be all right.
The "angry" torch song is when you are full of rage. They cheated on you, the bum! You're going to hang them up by their toenails. And we won't even mention what you'll do to the slime blankety blank they cheated on you with!
Finally there is the "it's over" torch song. The torch has burned down to ash and the ash is now dust to be brushed off the table of your affections. You can breathe a sigh of relief. It's over! There might be a certain amount of resentment. There could be a tinge of regret. But for the most part there is relief. Love is gone and you can wake up to a sunshine day and not look back at the storm clouds of the past.
