Hi Gerold,
Here is a picture of the Flag of Logos of the USS Robert L. Wilson.  I took this picture at the 2002 USS Robert L. Wilson's 20th Anniversary Reunion.  I had this Flag made up at my cost and presented it at the 20th Anniversary Reunion showing the 3 logos that the Wilson had during its years of service. The Flag shows the commissioned and the decommissioned dates.
When I boarded the USS Robert L. Wilson in September of 1950, this first logo was on our ship's stationery. It also represented to my knowledge, as you can see on the flag, the number 8 was the first time these ships (USS Robert L. Wilson, USS New, USS Holder, USS Rich, USS Damato, USS Basilone) were known as the 8 Ball Squadron.
I believe this was the first time the Navy used the term?
The next logo does not say squadron but is the logo of the Disney character Goofy (USS Robert L. Wilson only)
The Walt Disney studios out of California designed and presented this logo for the ship to use.  I have a copy of the letter of this from the archives.
The third logo of the Ram came around the 60's.
These logos were either used on stationery or patches.
In the future, this flag can be presented to a Navy Museum or at the Anapolis/MD Navy Academy.
Gerry--if you want to, you can research any of this info provided above.  You might consider putting up on the Wilson website.
Thanks.  If you have any questions or would like further info, please feel free to call me or email me.
Sincerely,
Shipmate Donald Karaus

ROBERT L WILSON SHIP'S SHIELD

This photo was provided by Jim Helriggle and is hanging on the wall in his home with a photograph of USS Robert L Wilson DD847

USS ROBERT L WILSON DISNEY PATCH

According to our shipmate Donald G Karaus, who served aboard the Robert L., during the period 1950 to 1954, this Patch was supposedly requested and created by Walt Disney in 1951. This Patch depicts "Goofey" Smashing a Submarine!! This Patch is featured on the New RLW hat produced for the 2002 Reunion. If you don't have one ordered, consider doing so, they are beautiful and unique. We also have just the patch available in the Ships Store

THE WALT DISNEY PATCH PLAQUE

Received this photo of the Disney Patch Plaque from our Friend (Ron Pollander) and it belonged to his Father. He writes; "I can't really tell you much about it because I don't really know. I was hoping that you or someone off the Robert L Wilson might be able to tell me something about it? I have noticed that they did change the design of the Logo giving the plaque to the R L Wilson. My dad graduated from boot camp in 1953 in Bainbridge, MD. Company 257, 44th Battalion, 4th Regiment, according to his graduation album completed training l0/l0/53. Anything you could bring up is much appreciated". ________________________________________ Letter Received Oct. 5th, 2002 (Ron's Plaque)....... The Studio did cartoons for Naval Vessels in the early 1950's. They were meant to be used as stack decorations and embroidered patches. Each ship's was tailored to some extent to their mission. We were part of an ASW Hunter-Killer Task Force Group, thus the clobbering of a sub's periscope with a torpedo by "Goofy". Each ship also got the copyright rights to reproduce the cartoon. I have a copy of the letter. Some enterprising individual, years later found a shop that would make relief copies of the cartoon, mounted on the plaque, for sale to crewmembers. That I believe is what this one is. s/s Phil Dilloway
