TWO HEARTS

by DivaMagenta

There once was a fair young maiden
Who lived beside the sea.
Her home sat high above the cliffs
Where winds blew wild and free.

Its glory and its splendor hid
Dark secrets long untold -
Of ancient love and death's pure dreams
And hearts turned hard and cold.

For this fair maiden was a witch
With eyes of china blue
Whose passion for the man she loved
Caused all the things she'd do.

He'd loved her once, or claimed it so
In the tender hours they shared
Beneath the moon of Martinique
In twilight's mystic lair.

She knew he loved another, too
Her innocent childhood friend.
But, happy to own half his heart,
She wished it not to end.

But conscience overruled him, so
He knew he had to choose.
His love was true and strong for one,
The fair-haired maid must lose.

And so, he broke the news to her
But she refused to hear,
Her icy eyes burned with a fire
That called destruction near.

She fled his sad apologies
And raced into the night,
Beckoning the powers she held
In anger and in might.

She cursed him with a vengeful laugh
And conjured Death to be
Upon him and to those he loved
Throughout eternity.

There would be no rest for him
No respite, no repair,
No friend his tragic, horrid life
With him would ever share.

For Death would not take him away
Into that land of peace,
But take him only partially,
Left pleading for release.

Yes, he would still exist, but not
As normal men should be.
A piece of Death would own his soul
As jealously as she.

And thus, she spun her evil web
Of hatred, lies and fear.
He saw the ones he loved fall prey,
One by one, tear by tear.

His closest friends, his family,
The woman he loved so.
He watched them die, he buried them -
A fate he'd never know.

For the man and the fair maiden
Still live this very day
He, agonized by what he is
And those who've gone away.

And she still craves his tender love
As much as she did then.
But a thousand spells shall never cause
His hatred for her to end.

Two desperate souls, two bitter hearts,
Two lives linked evermore
Bound tight by cords of love and hate,
Two casualties of war.

The night winds still blow fierce and cold
Beside the raging sea.
The same house stands there, tall and proud
In quiet dignity.

And if you go there - listen, watch,
For these two may appear
In ghostly wails of loneliness
And weeping crystal tears.

But do not tarry, do not stay -
Please dare not hesitate,
Lest the fair-haired witch choose you
To join them in their fate...
