GUINEA PIGS R US!

We Welcome Cavy Lovers From Around The World!

This web site showcases all the guinea pigs we have had, past and present. (We are NOT breeders. Almost all our cavies have been adopted from shelters or unwanted homes.) This opening page will always feature the pets we currently have. There also is a section for you to display your favorite guinea pig photo. ENJOY!

Introducing Alvin & Simon!

On January 13, 2011, we adopted these 2 adorable brothers from the Humane Society! We were told that they are 1 yr., 3 months old. Alvin is very timid but Simon was immediately at home in his new surroundings!

Simon

Looking like a baby panda, Simon is very aware of the camera and everything in his surroundings!

Carrot-Stained, Curious Alvin!

Although Alvin and his bro, Simon, are both over 2 lbs, we hope to spoil them with foods they've been neglected and put some extra weight on them!

Stewie!

Don't let this sweet face fool you, Stewie has quite a mischievious streak! (See Stewie's Story Below!)

Remembering Nigel

Although Nigel looked black and white, he was actually a very dark chocolate brown and white. He looked like a delicious Oreo cookie! When Nigel was a baby, we used to joke that he was training for the 2008 Olympics because he ran as fast as lightening! (See Nigel's Story Below!)

Nigel's Health Issues

Handsome Nigel in natural light. August 2008 was a difficult month for Nigel with his first teeth trimming accompanied by a gum infection and bladder infection. Poor Nigel lost one pound(!) but, after the infections disappeared and he had his teeth trimmed again, he returned to his ol' self and loved eating again! His favorite treat this summer was vanilla yogurt drops! (Photo taken in September 2008.)

November 2009 Update: Sadly, we lost Nigel after 15 months of great medical care, Critical Care syringe feedings and TLC due major teeth issues. Although bros Stewie & Nigel didn't share a cage (due to fighting), their cages were next to each other and they had playtime together. After Nigel's passing, Stewie was in a "funk" for almost 2 weeks he quietly stayed in his house and slept more than eating/playing. We felt the same as Stewie!

The Story of Brothers Stewie & Nigel!

We adopted two-month-old brothers, Stewie and Nigel on August 23, 2004 from a local family that had grown too large for the individual attention these two deserve. When we first set eyes on these skinny little babies, The Beatles' hit "Gotta Get You Into My Life" expressed our immediate heart-melting sentiments towards these boys!

Stewie is named after the most hilarious cartoon character of all time, "Stewie Gilligan Griffin" on "The Family Guy" -AND- sweet mouse "Stuart Little"! Nigel is named after Christopher Guest's famous rock musician character in "Spinal Tap"! In less than one month, both boys doubled in weight! They are thoroughly enjoying their new pampered lifestyles and all the yummy veggies! They are so playful and funny!

2007 Update: Stewie and Nigel continue to enjoy life daily - they are happy and healthy and always hungry! Nigel is sweet and Stewie is feisty!

2008 Update: Stewie had to have very serious surgery in March, 2008. Poor Stewie had a painful kidney stone lodged in his ureter and couldn't pass it. Before the diagnosis was made, he had pain with urinating, frequent urination and blood in the urine. His appetite decreased and he lost weight. Fortunately, our veterinarian is amazing and so talented and saved Stewie's life! Stewie is AWESOME! He is back up to his normal weight and is back to his hilarious, nosy self! He sure keeps us laughing every day! (See Nigel's medical updates above.)

Stewie's 2009-2010 Update: Over the course of several months, Stewie lost some weight and spent more time resting. We thought this was older age setting in but he went to the doctor during the winter. Once again, Stewie was diagnosed with a bladderstone. An ultrasound was required to find the exact location and determine whether it was operable. Stewie had 3 bladderstones stuck in his tiny ureters! (OUCH!) He underwent this highly intricate and delicate surgery immediately and his recovery was nothing less than miraculous, thanks to his talented doctor!

Stewe's Summer 2010 Update: Stewie is AWESOME! He is enjoying life - hungry, playful and happy since his major surgery months ago! We couldn't be happier! His funny antics keep us laughing every day! We have stopped ALL high-calcium foods in Stewie's diet - no spinach, spring mix, broccoli, etc., due to his 4(!) calcium-based, life-threatening bladderstones. In the evening, his diet is supplemented with Oxbow's Critical Care because he loves it and, at his age (5 years old), the extra nutrition can't hurt!

Stewie & Nigel's Long-Lost Brother Joins Our Family!

On March 18, 2005, we added S & N's brother to our cavy family! We named him Peabody after the intelligent and adorable white dog "Mr. Peabody" on the great Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons! It was quite a reunion when the triplet brothers met each other after a 7-month separation! Peabody LOVES hay, pellets, green leaf lettuce and carrots but still hasn't acquired a taste for other veggies yet, which is quite surprising. All 3 Triplet Scamps have separate cages but Peabody enjoys playtime with Stewie when their cages are being cleaned; however,he does not have as friendly of a relationship with brother Nigel for some unfortunate reason. Although Peabody was quite unexpected, he is a VERY welcomed member to our family! (Photo taken in 2005.)

2006 Update: Peabody started to lose weight and interest in food early in the year. A trip to the vet revealed that his teeth were in need of trimming - his right lower molars are malaligned. So far, he has had 3 successful teeth-trimming procedures. He will probably need this procedure performed every 3 months or so for the rest of his life but HE IS WORTH IT! He is a very special, very precious member of our family! He tries very hard to compensate for his malalignment and deserves a "A+" for effort!!

2007 Update: Peabody has required almost monthly teeth trimming for the past year due to the severe malalignment (and quick growth) of his teeth on the right side. He receives multiple syringe feedings daily of Oxbow's Critical Care (he LOVES it), which provides important vitamins he needs. He also receives liquid Vit. C daily because he cannot eat many veggies. Various baby foods and vanilla Ensure are periodic supplements to his diet. Despite ALL the problems he has with his molars, he still tries to eat [and is successful] pellets and hay almost daily! Amazing! His doctor calls him "stoic" and always says that it's Peabody's strong will that has sustained him - and we agree!!

Peabody is a sweet, appreciative little fellow! After each Critical Care feeding, he likes to curl up on his Cavy Mom or Dad's lap and purr and sleep!

FUN FACT: Peabody has many nicknames - P-Boo, The Boo, Boo-Boo, Boo-Berry!

2008 Sad Update: We lost P-Boo exactly 3 years after adopting him due to worsening complications with his root abscesses and teeth problems. We miss him terribly and think of him daily. (Eternal Thanks to St. Jude for watching over Peabody and helping him for over 2 years!)

"Jeepers!" It's Jeepers!

In June 2006, we adopted this little cutie-pie from one of our veterinarian's technicians. When we saw him (and couldn't resist him), we felt like saying, "Jeepers! Now we have 5 boys!" Hence, Jeepers was named! He was born on April 15, 2006. He is GORGEOUS with the silkiest fur! He whistles quite loud (afterall, he has a lot of competition) and LOVES all veggies, especially baby carrots! He is a wild youngster, running around his aquarium, disrupting everything, yet he enjoys snuggling in our laps! We are just crazy about him! (Photo taken in 2006.)
