Guinea Pig Scrapbook From the Past & Present

Here are babies Coco (left) and Ginger (right), the FIRST two cavies we ever adopted - in 1975! (We kept them in separate cages because we didn't want them to breed.) Having Coco and Ginger began a life-long love and admiration for cavies!

This is sweet Stanley. Stanley's diet included a supplement of fresh bananas, vanilla Ensure, Vit. B & C to try to help him gain weight. All of this was great with Stan because he LOVED eating from his syringe! Although Stan enjoyed eating veggies & pellets on his own, he was dangerously thin when we adopted him and gained several ounces of weight due to his supplement! (Photo taken in 2000.)

Baby Peppy at 1 month old (14 oz.)! (Photo taken in June, 1994.)

Spanky (an agouti) truly was "a little rascal"! Spanky's favorite foods were broccoli and spinach! Spanky was in love with Kipper (even though they were in separate cages) and went wild whenever we talked to her! (Photo taken in 2001.)

Ralphie & his polymer figurine!

Our Ralphie-Boy was named after hilarious "Ralph Kramden" (Jackie Gleason) on "The Honeymooners." Despite several health problems he suffered throughout his life, including 3 surgeries (which you can read about on our "Cavy Care Tips" page), he continuously maintained a high spirit and seemed unphased by his problems. Because of Ralphie's incredible spirit and dark brown fur, his obvious nickname was "tufflilbear" (tough little bear)! Ralphie's photo was an "Honorable Mention" in "Critters USA" 1999 Annual Issue! (Photo taken in 1999.)

Our Funniest (Natural Pose) Cavy Photo Ever!

Baby Peppy working hard to destroy his oatmeal roll house! (Photo taken in 1994.)

This is Buffy who was always the center of attention her whole life! (Photo taken in 1990.)

Rocky (neutered) and Skippy! A cuter couple there never has been! Rocky was protective of Skippy - until it was veggietime - then, it was every cavy for himself! (Photo taken in 2002.)

Skippy!

Posing like her cousin, the capybara, Skippy checks out her surroundings on the sofa! Because of her running and active spirit, we named her "Skippy" - plus her fur color resembled yummy peanut butter! "Choosy Cavy Moms Choose Skippy!" (Photo taken in 2002.)

Tribute to Chumley (a.k.a. The Wolfman!)

We were told this little furball was a "girl" was named Gigi when we adopted "her" in March, 2002. After discovering "Gigi" was a BOY, we realized a new name was in order! We have renamed this little wooly-worm "Chumley" after the lovable walrus on the old "Tennessee Tuxedo" cartoons! In early 2003, Chumley suddenly developed a severe eye infection (from an unknown source). This terrible infection affected his quality of life so badly, it was necessary for his doctor to remove his right eye. He had an extensive recuperation that required hand-feeding, Oxbow's Critical Care and medication.

In November, 2006, Chumley required surgery to remove a large benign growth on his belly. This procedure was serious and complicated. Chumley came through the surgery fine but had difficulty waking up from the anesthesia. Although Chumley had extensive sutures on his underside, he came home the same day and acted like nothing ever happened! He was back to eating and playing immediately!

Chumley's amazing life, spirit and recovery made him "Pet of the Day" on Feb. 12, 2007. (You can read about him in their archives at www.petoftheday.com).

We had more than 5 years with this little woolly-worm and we feel very lucky!! (Photo taken in 2005.)

Quincy

We named Quincy after the TV show character (played by great actor Jack Klugman) although he looked more like the Cowardly Lion! Quincy's favorite food was spinach but if he had his way, he would have eaten veggies 24 hours a day! (Photo taken in 2001.)

Brothers Stanley and Ollie enjoyed their nightly visit together and special treats! This is our favorite photo of these handsome boys! (Photo taken in 2000.)

This is Teddy, his personality was as sweet as his face! (Photo taken in 1994.)

Summertime Fun, Cavy-Style!

Spanky stopped playing long enough to pose like RCA's famous dog, Nipper, hearing "his master's voice"! He and Kipper each got jealous when we talked to the other one of them. In this photo, Spanky had to stop playing because we were talking to Kipper! (Photo taken in 2000.)

When Kipper was a baby, she had a routine of biting 2 or 3 times on the edge of her pellet bowl before eating from it! (Photo taken in 1999.)

After enjoying one of his favorite treats (green leaf lettuce) on the sofa, Chumley begins to investigate and receives an affectionate face rub from the cameraman! (Photo taken in 2002.)

Looking more like the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, Spanky stopped to pose between treats! (Photo taken in 2002.)

Although Skippy was hearty and maintained a healthy weight, she was the pickiest eater! Veggies and treats that make other cavies estatic didn't interest her much! However, she begged several times a day for Vitakraft's Yogurt Drops! (Photo taken in 2004.)

This is Corky. When we adopted her, they told us she was a boy and that she had short hair. Soon after, we realized she was a girl and her hair kept growing and growing and growing! Corky was not only a beauty but was one of the SWEETEST cavies and a real lovebug! She LOVED being held on her back and being pet under her chin for minutes at a time! Pretty Corky was featured on the "Pet of the Day" web site in August, 1999! (Photo taken in 1996.)

Cavy Wedding

This is Sammy. He was the largest cavy we ever had, weighing 3 1/2 lbs.! Despite being the largest, he was so laid back and friendly! (Photo taken in 1988.)

Rocky's fur was a delicious mixture of "rocky road" candy colors - fudge, marshmallow and caramel! We were Rocky's 3rd owners, which is inconceivable - who could give up a sweet & funny boy like this? After adopting Rocky, he gained 7 oz.! Although his time with us was painfully short, he will always live in our hearts with lots of love! (Photo taken in 2002.)

Pillsbury Dough-Pep!!! Hmm-Hmmm!! (Photo taken in 1995.)

This is Sparky. He was won in a school raffle (what a ridiculous way to find a good home for a pet!) Lucky for him (and us), we were the winners! (Photo taken in 1978.)

This is Mindy. Due to neglect by her previous owner, she remained quite petite all her life but she was so sweet and loveable! She had the same coloring as our Miss Kipper! (Photo taken in 1979.)

Peppy gives Teddy a brotherly kiss! (Photo taken in 1995.)

Precious Peppy in all his glory! This is one of our favorite photos of Peppy! (Photo taken in 1999.)

TRIBUTE TO SWEET BARNEY

This is our adorable Barney on his birthday, July 25th. He was named after one of the funniest TV characters ever - "Barney Fife" (Don Knotts) on the classic "Andy Griffith Show". Barney won "Honorable Mention" in the Humane Society's photo contest in 1998! Barney's personality was as unique as his coloring! He (along with our Peppy) were the funniest and most curious cavies in our family! Barney's first year of life was spent in another household where he was very neglected physically and nutritionally. After we adopted him and spoiled him with TLC, lots of great food and a fun interactive living environment, he was always happy, excited and curious! Just looking at his sweet face is heartwarming! (Photo taken in 1996.)
