IRISH POTATO FAMINE

The potato famine of 1845-1848,plagued the country of Ireland and pushed many men to flee to the land of promise,the USA.John & Charles Stanage were among those to leave their home in Co.Cavan,Ireland, in hopes of finding a better life in the US.They were well to do potato farmers before the famine hit Ireland.John came to America in 1847 and Charles in 1866.Once here they married two sisters from Limerick,Ireland Bridget and Catherine Murnan.They all settled in Yankton,South Dakota where they remained for the rest of their lives.

ORGINAL STANAGE HOME

Grandma in front of Original Stanage house on her last trip home to South Dakota.She is sitting on what is left of a windmill that stood there years ago.Rapid City,SD.Now is Roth Ranch sold in 1992.Grandma Evelyn passed away a few months after this trip.
