STILES EARNS A 800 SERIES AT DEVIL DOG LANES

Howard Stiles of Vista rolled what is believed to be the very first 800 series in a league at Devil Dog Lanes in the Camp Pendleton Base. It is also believed to be only the 2nd 800 rolled in that house and that was back in March 13th of 2003 by Fred Riano in the All Marine Tournament.

The 803 set also marked the very first time that Stiles had ever gone over 800 in his bowling career.

On his way to the 803 mark, Stiles capped the 3 game set with a 300 game and finished the night with games of 278-225-300/803

The scores were posted in the His & Hers league on Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Tracking the Bowling News caught up with Howard who will be turning 52 on May 15th:

TTBN: Congratulations on your great accomplishment!

STILES: Thank You very much

TTBN: I know that you have been very busy the last few years with your fire fighting career but can you give us a brief overview of your bowling career?

STILES: I have been bowling for 30 years, but the past 5 have been the most serious ( i.e. practice, lessons). For the past 5 years, I have been assisting several bowlers with lessons and video work. I have been assisting Andy Neeman with his clinics on Saturdays.

I have 5 - 300 games with 4 being USBC sanctioned.

I have 1 - 800 series, the 803.

I have shot about 10 - 299 games.

TTBN: Can you tell us about your PBA involvement?

STILES: My best finish in a PBA tournament was 10th at the Resident Pro Championship in Palo Alto (when ?). I made the cashers round in my only trip to the ABC Masters in 1998.

Before joining the PBA, I had won 2 NABI titles in one year and was forced out of the club.

TTBN: I know you recently retired from firefighting so now that you have some additional free time for bowling can you tell us what your involvements are?

STILES: I am a current member of the NCUSBCA Board of Directors. I am on the Tournament Committee and the Hall of Fame committee. I joined the Association to try and put some new ideas into the organization and maybe increase our tournament participation.

TTBN: How long have you been a PBA member and what are your future plans for tournament play?

STILES: I have been a PBA member for 15 years, but due to my firefighting career, I did not bowl that much. Now that I am retired, I plan on bowling some PBA senior events with the first one being the Senior U.S. Open this summer in Las Vegas. The most I bowled in one year in the PBA was 4 tournaments which I cashed in 2, made finals in 1, and missed cut in a doubles tournament.

TTBN: What ball did you use during your 803 set at Devil Dog Lanes?

STILES: The ball I threw for my 300/803 was a brand new, out of the box Mission Domination drilled by Monty Stratton in his Oceanside shop that day.

TTBN: What lanes were you on that night and what kind of pattern did you have? I know all the bowlers are aware of how difficult it is to score high at Devil Dog Lanes

STILES: The shot on lanes 33 and 34 was the normal house pattern at Devil Dog Lanes. I had just shot a 299 there two weeks prior, leaving a 4 pin.

TTBN: Howard, when i heard you shot those scores at Devil Dog Lanes i knew right away that an honor score of that magnitude had not been achieved there in quite some time

STILES: I believe that my 300 was the 22nd in that house and as you know, it was the 2nd sanctioned 800, but the first in a league.

TTBN: Thanks for your time with us and again TRACKING THE BOWLING NEWS would like to congratulate you on the outstanding achievement!

STILES: My pleasure and thank you very much!
