WHAT GLOBE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE YEAR 2000

1.Charlene Shores

got over 1,000 signatures in support of her bill (carried by Sen. Jackie Speier) to give San Mateo County Retired Employees the ability to pass forward their benefits to domestic partners.
While Gov. Davis did not sign the bill, it was received by both the county and Union negotiators as a viable idea.

2.GLOBE supported No on Knight, and walked the precincts for No on Knight Prop.
22.

3.GLOBE supported Nina Moore and others in the fights for Fremont School District Board Member. She received the highest vote count of the field of those running for the board position.

4.Those who  we endorsed, won re-election to their  respective offices, Ken Pon and Fred Collins to the   San Leandro Board of Education.

5.Nate Miley won as Alameda County Superintendent.

6. Taucher won re-election to
her seat.

7.Torkalson won over Rainey.

These people were endorsed by GLOBE

and in some cases GLOBE members manned phone lines and walked precincts for
them.

In the national scene,
Charlene Shores and Kevin Dowling present and past presidents of GLOBE were elected as Democratic Delegates and attended the
National Democratic Committee Assembly which elected GORE as their banner
carrier.

On the Civic Recognition Level,

GLOBE recognized Pastor Kay Wellington and
Barbara Konecny co-founder of WOFF for their support and participation in the GLBTQ community efforts.

Past honorees have been Guy Emanuele (sp) and John
Iverson both activists in behalf of fair treatment of GLBTQ people, and John needs no introduction.

Many members of GLOBE became Board Members of the

Lighthouse Community Center

and were instrumental in establishing the structure and funding for this large endeavor.

 1.Kevin Dowling,

2. Grant Peterson,

3. Marvin Burrows,

4. Frank Howell,

5. Mary Ann Reno

6.Mary Lavelle

among others have been hard at work volunteers, in seeing to it that the Lighthouse Community Center became a reality.

It has been a busy 2 years.

We welcomed Rita Kresha and Frank McNamara to our board.

We have a lot more things planned for this year....2001!

From the desk of the GLOBE's Co-President

With the certainty of the election of George W. Bush as the next President of the United States, we at GLOBE can look back at a eventful year making the Legislature a 50-50 Republican and Democratic Parties.

This year end unmasked the politicalization of the Florida and United States Supreme Courts.  And now we await the next 4 years of either a do- nothing administration or hard negotiations before compromises.

Other national landscapes saw the Vermont Legislature squeak by with affirmation of Gay partnerships, while the religious right continued its agenda to force states to not recognize the partnership legal in Vermont.

In a more local level, we saw the passage of Proposition 22 defining "marriage" yet again, and the submission of AB 25 to recognize legal
relationships between domestic partners.  We saw the election of GLOBE endorsed candidates, and the establishment of the Lighthouse Center in
Hayward.

GLOBE's co-president Charlene Shores submitted a bill to permit retired domestic partners to receive benefits in the San Mateo County.  This bill was
to affirm the negotiations between the San Mateo County and its unions.

Gov. Davis did not sign the bill. <>
We still have a lot of work ahead of us in the 2001 year.

We were able to accomplish much in year 2000 thanks to dedicated efforts and funding of our membership.

In 2001 we will have a fundraiser on the second Saturday in March as well as our celebration of coming out day in October.

We will also have a meeting for our membership to discuss "What Happens to the Ballots" presented by Mary
Lavelle and another Registrar of Voters in Alameda County.  When this has
been finalized, then look for the announcement  on this GLOBE web-page of its forthcoming   presentation.

From all of us at GLOBE to all of you, our membership, our friends,  our family, we thank you for your participation and look forward to January 2001,

Without you, we could not get as much done .

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.

Barbara Jue , Co-President  GLOBE
