A history of the Community Center for LGBTQ in Southern Alameda County] Under the sponsorship of COMMPRE of Horizon Services, representatives of many Gay and Lesbians groups came together at Southland Mall. and welcomed by Hayward's Mayor: Roberta Cooper and keynoted by the Rainbow Community Center (of Contra Costa County) co-founder Gwen Swenson and Executive Director, Margret Walker. Hayward Councilmember Kevin Dowling, a co-founder of GLOBE, gave the group a brief history of the need for the community center and indicated that now was the time that the East Bay Southern Alameda County go forward to make this concept a reality. Gwen and Marget shared their experiences in developing the Rainbow Community Center in Contra Costa County from concept to concreteness. This was a working session to formulate and identify the elements for developing a Southern Alameda County GLBTQ Community Center, as yet unnamed. Areas of concern were noted, and the large group broke out into smaller groups to address each of those concerns. The members regrouped at the end of the session to share their results and to reconfirm their committment to making the Community Center a reality. Help towards the fund to secure a GLBTQ Community Center in Hayward are much welcomed. We also need volunteers to HOLD fundraisers and to HELP out at fundraisers.
