Hi, I found your messages on EzellForum when searching the net for Littleton Wells. He was a brother to my ancestor John "Jack" Wells. I recently made contact with another Descendant of Jack Wells, who took the lineage back a couple more generations. Armed with that new data I think (unproven) I found a link back to the immigrant Wells in early VA along with quite a few new matriarchial lines. At this point it is rather scattered in terms of where the info is, but I am working to put it together and it is a big task.
I am very interested to know if you have any info on who the children of littleton Wells were other than his daughter, your ancestor.
I know you must be anxious to learn of all these new relatives, and I will attempt to send you the info in a series of messages that either give the info directly or reference a web address where it can be viewed and copied or printed.
Hope to hear from you soon.

The following letter formed the basis that led to the discovery of earlier Wells generations, and in the next message I will provide the steps of how that was done, but first the Letter:
Copied from the original by Cole Hudson, 4-20-2000
Letter written by Dr. William Miles Wells to Edward, a Wells family relative
Durant, Oklahoma, Oct 13, 1910
As my Father told me many years ago.
My Great Grandfather Wells was directly from Wales who came to America and Settled in or about Augusta GA where my Grandfather Benjamin Wells was raised. He married a Miss Mootry of German extraction and raised a large family in Richmond County GA Augusta the County Cite.
My father John Wells was the oldest child. William next oldest, Mary next, Benjamin next, Lidia next, then Littleton the youngest son. My father married a Miss Didamia Smith of Edgefield District S.Carolina and soon moved west and settled in Macon County Ala. His brothers & sisters married and followed on and settled in Macon County except Benjamin and Littleton who settled in Henry County and finally went south into Fla.
William Wells settled in Barbour County near Eufaula. Aunt Mary married W. Stone and lived in Union Town Macon County. Aunt Lidia lived a few miles East. Had married a Wm. Shepard. They had raised large and interesting families whom I visited in Summer of 1856 & 1858. My Father told me of some of his first cousins , one family settling in VA, one in KY and one in TN and other in AL. Some of whom I met while a small boy. Especially one Abner J. Wells who settled a few miles west of Montevallo, Shelby County, AL. I have been at his home. He was a fine gentleman and lived in a fine home. One of the cousins settled in MS. Benjamin F. Wells who left a son who is now a brilliant lawyer of Jackson, MS whose name is Ben F. Jr. One of the cousins settled in LA, and I had the pleasure of meeting one of his sons Capt. Wells during the siege of Vicksburg. Judging from those I have seen, they are moderately tall - straight - and dignified of a jolly good nature but don't talk very much and are of decision of character and they all go to the war. My father kept up a correspondence with many of the families passing one letter each year.
My father finally settled near Columbiana, Shelby County, AL and raised eight children four sons and four daughters. The eldest Benjamin, and Sallie the next died in early childhood. Amanda, and Malinda, Kenion, John M., David Nicholson, Thomas, Loucinda, William M., and Mary. Thomas died at thirteen years old.
Amanda married Denis Askins. Matilda married George W. Farr of Shelby County. Kenion and John married sisters Sallie and Martha Price of Autauga County and settled there. David married Mary Strange of Autauga and first settled in Autauga County afterwards moved to Bibb County AL and raised his family near Six Mile Station. Loucinda married Benjamin
F. Scarbrough of Shelby County, settled in Autauga. Mary married William G. Easterling of Autauga and settled there.
Kenion Wells raised three sons: David, William L., John T., Mary, Parlee, and Alice. Mary married Tal Mullins of Shelby County, Parlee married John Cook, and Alice married William Mullins of Shelby. The oldest son David married a Cooper & left two children himself dying young. William L. Wells married Emma Dupree raised at Macon MS but had moved to Sherman TX before marrying. W. L. was a fine fellow, a thorough businessman, and made a good fortune at Vicksburg where he died at about 50 years old. John T. Wells married in Vicksburg a Miss Dona England. They have two children and now live East.
John Wells married Martha Price, raised two sons Jas M. Wells now of Bonham TX and Thomas Wells now of Paris. Minnie the oldest now many years dead. Mollie who married Thomas Emphry of Paris TX and Ana Wells who married ? Jeron of Paris. Jas Monroe is a fine business man has accumulated a fine fortune and has a host of friends. He married a Miss Mary Nussellee of Bonham. Have no children.
David Nicholson Wells married a Miss Mary Strange of Autauga, raised five sons and three daughters. John T., Elizabeth, Ed L., Judson, Edgar, Joseph C., Mary and Minnie. David had many friends, no enemies. Made a good Soldier and a good Citizen, and was in every way a Christian gentleman. He died moderately young.
William M. was born and raised in Shelby County till fifteen years old then lived in Autauga till the Civil War opened, raised part of a company and blended with Colonel William H. Worthington of Prattville who was made Captain and Wells a Lieutenant in a short service regiment which was soon dissolved and entered into full service for four years or duration of the war. After four months was made Assistant Surgeon and was in that capacity for balance of term although at several different places, some field service but mostly in Hospital service. After the war, went to Fannin County Texas, resided year and a half, went back to AL and in Oct 1867 married Zoe E. Melton of Perry County AL. Settled in Rome, GA, moved to Atlanta, GA, and after a few years went back to Texas and raised a family of five girls. The oldest Jessie, next Ella Mary, Zoe, Williamine, Leila May.

Curtis,
After I corresponded with Cole Hudson concerning his Wells Forum message, I searched the usual places on the net and found evidence that our Wells family came not from Wales, but instead from Wells, Somerset, England to VA in the early 1600s. I have no proof of this, but when all of the website info is considered it forms a strong case. This has been further supported by clues contained in Cole's subsequent document offerings, in particular, the 1910 letter. Below I have quoted certain of those clues followed by the URLs of websites I found related to such clues. Additionaly I have listed other URLs that expand on the basic proposition.

Thanks for the information. I am trying to make sense out of it. My initial reaction to the Welsh ancestry is "prove it". I have seen this so often turn out to be incorrect that I alway immediately suspect the authenticity. But sooner or later I will find one that washes.
I was able to find one bit of confirmation.
The author of the 1910 material mentions an Abner J. Wells in Shelby Co., AL the 1850 census for Shelby shows:
Abner J. Wells 42 b: SC Farmer
Sarah Wells 24 b: AL
Thomas Jefferson Wells 04 b: AL
Columbus Wells 01 b: AL
John Pinn 17 b: SC Laborer
John Pinn may be unrelated and working on the farm, or he might be related some way.
The author mentions his father having settled in Shelby County also. The 1850 census also shows:
Jack Wells 60 b: GA Farmer
Didamia Wells 49 b: SC
David Wells 18 b: AL
Lucinda Wells 14 b: AL
William Wells 09 b: AL (author of the above piece) Mary A. Wells 08 b: AL
I also noted this note to you:
"After I corresponded with Cole Hudson concerning his Wells Forum message, I searched the usual places on the net and found evidence that our Wells family came not from Wales, but instead from Wells, Somerset, England to VA in the early 1600s. "
I also doubt this. I have seen others claim this connection without proof. If some turns up I would be delighted to see it. Given this connection, I
have a hunch, although I have not seen all of this yet, that I know which family this researcher has connected to and I think I know who came up with the Wells Somerset connection. Wells is a popular place to claim ancestry.
The fact is the location, site of the Wells Cathedral, was named after the artesian Wells, not a family. There have been Welles/Wells families in the vicinity since the 1100s. The bishops Hugo/Hugh de Welles and Jocelyn de Welles came from there. Their father was an Edward de Welles. However, I am unaware of any descendants of this family with connections to today.
I am familiar with the family depicted on the pages of Kenneth R. Wells and have a considerable amount of information probably from the same source. If I recall correctly, the researchers of this family have not made a connection to an immigrant ancestor, but I may be incorrect.
I also am familiar with William A. Wells of Georgia. I do not think these two families are connected, but I am willing to look at the evidence to show this. I think I have some material from William A. Wells, but as he indicates, he does not have anything earlier than Abner J. Wells.
You have tickled my interest. I would like to see more on this family.
The name Littleton Wells sounds familiar somehow. I will have to dig in the files to see why.
Here is a bit that is probably unrelated given the time frame, or is it?
From "The Histories fo Clay and Platte Counties, Missouri" 1885: John Wells, a native of Virginia, moved to Kentucky at an early day. Here Hasten Wells was born. Hasten in turn was the father of John B. Wells born 15 Nov 1800 in Montgomery Co., KY. He married Tabitha C. Davis, daughter of Benjamin Davis, on 12 Apr 1832. They moved in 1833 to Marion Co., MO then to what is not Platte County in 1836. Seven children were born to John and Tabitha Wells:
Leander E. Wells
John D. Wells
Littleton M. Wells
Laura Wells (m: _____ Mills)
Henrietta Wells (m: _____ Clark)
George Wells
Frances Wells
Luther J. Wells
Mattie Wells (m: J. C. Frazier) and died August 1881 leaving two children, Vernie Frazier and Regenie Frazier.
