The first Superman cartoon burst onto the screen in September of 1941, a relatively short time after the comic book debut. And Fleischers Studios made 16 more by 1943. Max and Dave Fleischer are the people who made the Popeye, and Betty Boop cartoons during the same period.
These cartoons are approx. 7 - 11 min long.

Max and Davie Fleischer were reluctant to take this assignment because it would require much more realistic designs and animation than they usually used. They tried to discourage the studio by stating they would need a budget of around $100,000 per short, four times the budget of an average Walt Disney cartoon, which then had the highest budgets in animation). To their shock, the Paramount suits agreed to the amount, which made the Superman series, in adjusted dollars, the biggest budgeted animation series in film history. The first one produced (titled Superman), was nominated for an Academy Award.

Filmation changed the name of the show in the second season to The Superman - Aquaman Hour, and by the third season it became The Batman - Superman Hour. It was canceled after protests from "Action For Children's Television" for violent content.

The format of the half-hour show consisted of a lead Superman adventure backed up by Superman Family Album, which started with Kal-El's arrival on Earth, and chronicled his eventual growth into Superman.
