IT WAS ON A COLD CRISP WINTERS NIGHT THE WIND WAS BLOWING HOWLING AND THE SNOW WAS COMING DOWN HARD, WHEN THERE WAS A KNOCK AT MRS BELLS DOOR IT WAS CHRISTMAS EVE AT MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER BELLS HOUSE. My story starts in Clinton Missouri with my great ,great grandmother Rippytoe a Indian lady living on the banks of the Osage river .There she met a Fur trapper Mr Frazell and they were married and had 6 or 7 children . One of the girls was my Great Grandmother Laura Frezell .She married a Mr Bell and had 4 girls there in Clinton MO. On that night Jessie James and his men stopped by Laura Bells house asking for a meal and a warm place to sleep for the night. She fixed supper for Jessie and his men .So she got out her big black Iron Skillet.
![]() she cooked their meal over her open fire place. In that Iron skilet.Boy !! if that skillet could talk what a story it could tell of what went on in that house that night . After dinner she placed blankets on the floor for them to sleep on . That skillet has been handed down to each generation and used by her & my grandmother ,then my mom,and then to me .I have used it for 50 years it is so covered with black hard grease on the bottom ,one inch thick and the bottom is now very thin. I retired it and gave it to my daughter Kerry ,My grandmother Lillian Bell used it and was very proud that her mom had cooked his dinner in that old skillet and She told me the story may times. This story was told to me by all my grandmother's .Who will get it next ? or who will want it?!! Who will care??? Jessy James was well known here in Missouri for takeing from the rich and giving to the poor.and robbing the trains ,He sure gave Mr Pinkerton a hard time
GEE!!! I wonder if this story below was about my grandmother Laura Bell..She was a widow
early in life and worked as a maid at the Old Clinton hotel. Also took in washing clothes for the men at the mill and that's another story.......From Clinton Mo.(Is this her story?) could bee HUH? THIS IS MY TRUE STORY ABOUT MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER..... GRANDMABABYDOLL aka Tinylil ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I FOUND THIS ON THE WEB Jesse James and the Widow retold by S. E. Schlosser One day, as Jesse James and his gang were riding through Missouri, they saw a farmhouse and stopped to ask for something to eat. A widow lived there with three small children. She didn't have much in the house, but shared with them what she had. It was while they were eating lunch that Jesse James noticed that something was bothering this generous widow. He questioned her about it, and she broke down and told him her story. The mortgage was due on the house that very day, and since her husband had died, she did not have the money to pay it. Her landlord was not a generous man, and was sure to put her children and herself out on the street. "How much money do you need to pay the mortgage?" Jesse asked the widow. "Fifteen hundred dollars," the widow sobbed. Jesse James took out his money bag, counted out $1500 dollars and presented it to the widow. "I can't take this," she protested, but Jesse James insisted she use the money to pay off the mortgage. "Just make sure you get a receipt," he warned her, and she promised that she would. Then he got a description of the man, and left with his gang. Jesse James and his gang waited in the woods near the house until the man had collected his money from the widow. Then they rode out onto the road and stole their money back from the landlord.
