Sychronicities, incredible meaningful coincidences as described by famed Swiss psychologist Dr. CARL JUNG, are Aspects of Close Encounters, expanding the puzzlement of mystery and the boundaries of consciousness. The connections, through time and space, of these events can be profoundly subtle, an indicator of possible deep intelligence at work and at play at some unknown level of reality.

SYNCHRONISTIC ASPECTS OF ENCOUNTERS The close encounter mystery comes in many shapes, sizes, disguises, forms, patterns and puzzles, riveting and confusing us with mounting stacks of questions, and astounding us with its depths and multi-faceted byways. Here, in this section, we will explore the aspect of synchronicity---patterns of meaningful coincidences as defined by Dr. Carl Jung, that suggest an intertwined matrix of consciousness as it relates to the UFO field, with its seemingly deliberate intrusion into consensus reality in unexpected moments and spaces that grab our attention, leaving the possible meaning for us to fill into the experience. Please be patient as we develop this section, as we in SPACE have had these type of close encounters many times...But first a recent true story, fresh from an experience of just the other day..... *** *** *** "THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE" INCIDENT by Harold Walter Egeln Science, astro-physics, cosmology and quantum theory are very much an interest of SPACE's Encounter Explorers, as the close encounter experience is a living showcase of those disciplines, an integral part of ufology. On December 3, 1999 a UFO educator in our research program attended an all-day symosium on "Future Time" held by the Arts & Science Collaborative, Inc. (ASCI) at the McGraw-Hill Building in New York City, featuring scientists, science fiction writers, artists and cyberspace travelers, exploring the possibilities of time travel, the developement of Internet time, and how time in the future will change. One of the speakers was Columbia University mathematician and physicist Brian Greene, author of the book "The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, And the Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Everything." Another speaker was sci-fi writer Greg Benford, author of "Timescape" and "Deep Time." Our UFO educator who attended the symposium told me about the event the following day (Sat., Dec. 4) over lunch. The next day (Sunday, December 5) I was with a friend enjoying my annual tour of the wonderful holiday windows and scenes in Manhattan, including the yearly model train display at the CitiCorp Center lobby, all set in scenes from Hudson Valley towns as reconstructed from the 1930's into the 1950's. After viewing and enjoying the exhibit, my friend used a restroom on the exhibit floor, while I, on a whim, decided to wait until we got inside the Barnes & Noble superstore in the building, just making it into the bookstore's men's room, which is located in the store's Children's section. Upon leaving the room, I noticed a single book on the windowsill by the restroom. It was "The Elegant Universe" under which was a popular city magazine, its title showing prominently... "TIME-Out"!!!! I was startled to see the book and where it was placed, with the connection to "Time," the topic of the symposium just two days before, featuring this book's author, Brian Greene. I immediately snapped a photo (as a journalist I usually carry around a small camera)....But there was more. Also on the windowsill, about a foot from the book was a magazine, "The Nation," with Seattle's famous SPACE Needle on its cover, featuring an article on the recent world economic trade summit there. Seattle is where "SPACE Explorer" newsletter editor Joseph Wiek is from, moving to New York in 1992, the year he found out about S.P.A.C.E. Seeing all this so unexpectantly shook me up, having experienced similiar synchronicities over the years, which have a placing and a timing which suggests a deliberate "attention-getter." Some of these "syncs" have happened in connection with UFO sightings, to be described soon in this section. When I noticed the book on the sill, I noted the time, thinking it might be "3:47." The number 47 comes up too much in connection with these syncs, that number being a whole other story. Of course, it was "3:47." Later, I realized other elements to this incident apart from the book,two magazines and the time. The Hudson Valley is where we have many proactive encounters and trains are an image that pop up many times in UFO-related dreams, a recurring pattern we have observed in our research...Just before experiencing this "sync" I had just enjoyed a model train exhibit in Hudson Valley settings....And, of course, Barnes & Noble ads are placed by Web-TV on this site. While this aspect of close encounters may not be an obvious element to many of those looking at this new website, to us who explore our own encounters, it is a crucial aspect of the mystery, for it demonstrates the workings and playings of a deep intelligence and a powerfully subtle consciousness, able to communicate on personal and universal levels, that creates new ways of knowing about reality, nudging us to think in new ways and alter our perceptions, all leading to an expanded awareness. What were the confluences of time and space which apparently created "The Elegant Universe Incident" through the curves of time and space, minds and bodies, converging at the CityCorp Center building, shown here, in New York City? ...And not only as a synchronistic aspect of close encounters, but for its implications in the wider horizons of a grand Cosmic Ecology encompassing all the driving underworkings at play in the universe and beyond, raising profound questions for the fields of science, consciousness and art, among other areas.

A "IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN" EPILOUGE...

And that was not the end of the whole 'Elegant Universe Incident" matter...On Saturday, January 8, 2000, Harold Egeln took a bus to Cobble Hill in downtown Brooklyn to meet up with two people who attended the ASCI "Future Time Symposium" a month before.

He was on his way to meet them for lunch at the New St. Clare Coffee Shop ("St. Clare" has a synchronistic meaning in connection with his first open encounter in the Hudson Valley in 1988...but that's another story at some future time). The three of them, after having lunch, were due to visit an exhibit in connection with the ASCI program.

Feeling an urge to get off the bus sooner than his intended stop, Egeln walked down Atlantic Avenue and noticed a new shop getting ready for an opening at a near future time. In the window was an illustrated notice posted showing a big-eyed, large-headed alien in a cup on a saucer, and the words, "The FLYING SAUCER Coffee & Tea Bar."

Posted right next to it was a "TIME OUT" magazine cover, but a different issue than the one that figured in the "Elegant Universe Incident" at Barnes & Noble.

Immediately upon seeing this, Egeln quickly checked his watch. It was, of course, "11:47"---with that number "47" appearing beyond coincidence, as it did in the bookstore a month before, and so many times over the years.

NEW SYNC UPDATE:

On April 16 Egeln, who arrived at 11:47 a.m., and two SPACE members returned to the cafe, now opened, to meet with owner Julie Ipcar, who co-owns the cafe with her husband John Brian.

As she leafed through the latest SPACE EXPLORER newsletter to read about this "Elegant Universe Incident," then noticed the mention of the number "47." Startled she told us that before coming she was working on some calcuations and that the number 47 came up, which it should not have.

What an Elegant Universe we live in, indeed!!!

A SIGHTING LEADS TO A SYNCHRONICITY SYMPHONY

The most significant episodes of synchronicity ever experienced within SPACE is to be found on our Close Encounters of the High Strangeness Kind Pages 8 and 9, centered around a 1995 UFO sighting over Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York.

It involves Rabbits, as metaphors, images, messengers and symbols, and it will make a lot of sense once you read through the account.

It involves Triangles and other symbols, experiences, staged sightings, missing time, strange knocks, quirky happenings and more.

An incredible chain of synchronisties over time and space, with many places, people and incidents, the remarkable unfolding of this has led to a breakthrough, what seems to be a communication and a contact situation.

The accounts could fit on this page as it involves amazing synchronisities, or on our contact page since it seems to be a significant interaction, or our sightings page, where we chose to place it because it was sparked by a UFO sighting over Coney Island five years before.

There is an overlap throughout the SPACE website, for it is difficult to label and catetorize a phenomenon which defies known parameters, forcing us to go beyond the envelope and boundaries. It is a process of learning, of altered perceptions, of adventure.

Perhaps even these synchronicties are what we label incidents which are really something larger and unknown, for which we do ot yet have a name....

SCIENTIST STUMBLES UPON SYNCHRONICITY 19 years ago Harley Rutledge, Ph.D., then chairman of the Physics Department at Southeast Missouri State University, wrote a groundbreaking book called "Project Identification: The First Scientific Field Study of UFO Phenomenon" (Prentice-Hall, 1981, out-of-print but SPACE has a copy). Intrigued by his own UFO sighting, in the 1970's he launched a field study based on skywatches with a team and scientific equipment to study UFOs, a study we refer to in our Contact in the Hudson Valley secion (Page 3). During the course of his work, he found that UFOs apparently reacted and responded to the presence of him and his team observers on a number of occassions. "We interacted with the phenomenon under study," he wrote. "Probably a great deal of UFO activity is subliminal---which, if true, could have serious ramfications." In his conclusion he called the phenomenon "a very subtle" kind, with the unlooked-for phenomenon of synchronicity, or "subtle coincidences" as he also termed them, arising in connection with his skywatches, along with what he called "accidential sightings." Cautioning readers against reading too much into chance coincidences, he cites several occassions that seemed to beyond chance. In his scientist's way, he writes: "The background material on coincidence is presented to help the reader in judging whether the 80-100 coincidences were really ALL coincidences---or whether many of them were planned events, intentional events by the intelligence behind the UFOs." While you, the site visitor, only got a glimpse of elements of synchronicties here, which also appear in the context of Contacts, Sightings and Dreams, as described on our website pages, we ask the same of you that Dr. Rutledge asked his readers. That also applies to the events in the "Breakthrough WOW" as described in the E-Book on this website, events which seem involve synchronisties way beyond any chance coincidence.
