This photo was taken by fashion photographer Norman Manard, (Minard, Menard? We're not sure), in 1956. Whatever your last name is, Norman, it sure is a nice picture!

1950's

Appears as "Leonard," 1959

"Martin, you have a circus going on inside of you. Obviously, if you can play that part, you can do this little trinket." (Alfred Hitchcock saw Martin in the play, "The Middle of the Night," and chose him for the part of Leonard in "North by Northwest)."

Leonard is a very cold, calculating character. Martin portrayed him as homosexual, which had to be assumed, as in the 1950's, this subject was probably too contorversial to be otherwise. (with James Mason).

Speaking to Charles Champlin, Martin said the original title was to be "THE MAN IN LINCOLN'S NOSE," but was changed because using Lincoln in a title was considered bad luck. This is Leonard hanging from a cliff. Realistic! (It looks like someone's falling out of Jefferson's nose)!

At the movie's "cliffhanger," Roger Thornhill, (Cary Grant), is holding Eve Kendall, (Eva Marie Saint), by one hand over the edge of Mt. Rushmore. He's pleaing for help from Leonard.

Leonard hasn't been a nice guy yet.

Hmm...

I won't spoil the ending. Don't miss it!
