Chuck, What an excellent site on the AJ-1. For Veterans Day 2002 we will be honoring the crew of AJ-1 122590 which was lost here on a cross country ferry mission on 22 June 1950. The Savage was flying from Edwards AFB to its home station at the NAS Pax River, Maryland. Due to a mechanical failure, 590 exploded and fell in flames over Huddleston, Virginia. Lost were: LTCD Willard Sampson age 33, James Moore, Jr. age 26, NAA, and Holiday Lee Turner age 41, of the Navy Bureau of Aeronatics. After 52 years they are finally being remembered. If any of you Savage guys would like to share your story this November, I welcome you to do so. E-mail is the best means of communication: JeffreyClemens@webtv.net . Fly Navy, Pastor Jeff
(Ed. note: Pastor Jeff was also instrumental in the memorial to a B-25 which crashed in the same area in 1943. Please see http://www.wp21.com/b25crash)

Was not in the heavies but we made the first cruise on the Forrestal together in 57.
(Ed. note): "first cruise" refers to VAH-1, where some of VC-8s crews went, instead of to VAH-11; VF-84 and VAH-1 (A3D Skywarriors which replaced the AJ Savages) were on that first "Show The Flag" 6th Fleet/Mediterranean Cruise together - although the USS Forrestal and VAH-1 had also cruised to the mouth of the Med during the Suez Crisis in 1956).

In 1956 as an AQB3 I was attached to VAH-2 at North Island. For 4 months of that year I was TAD to VC-6 (we shared the same hangar) to get maintenance training on the ASB-1 director system. Had the opportunity to work on both AJ's and A3D's. Learned a lot from tech. reps. Frank Rodgers and Bill Frame, CPO's Karkoff and Anderson and AQ1's Osborme, Gaynor, and Rose. Many great times at Div. beach parties on the Silver Strand, Coronado.

"Things went real well. One of my friends spoke about the AJ-1 from the vantage point of a career naval officer. The American Legion had their rifle squad out there and they blasted some holes in the sky. The one family that we were able to find after 52 years was unable to attend, but was deeply touched that people would still care...a wooden model which I had made of the Savage... has since been sent on to NAS Pax River where Five Niner Zero was stationed with NATC.... The monument looks great."
