Looking for info on 1953 Med Cruise.
My uncle Lt(jg) Robert E. Berger was a Naval Aviator on the med cruise in 1953 Squadron HedRon-2 or VC-4.
Trying to land his F2H "Banshee" on June 17, 1953 did not engage deck wire, skillfully avoided a group of men and went over the edge. recvd Navy Marine Cross posthumously. Looking for anybody that witnessed the accident or knew Bob Berger?
Thank You
Robert Loving
(Ed. Note: VC-4 Detachment 6 was on the USS Coral Sea, when VC-8 was also on board. Hedron 2 was a USMC squadron with photo-recon Banshees.)

"VC-6 Origin of Squadron insignia"
The article was written by LCDR Frank J. Shaw, VC-6 Flight Officer (He was Maintenance Officer when I was at North Island)
-
"Composite Squadron SIX possesses one of the more interesting squadron insignia seen as a flight jacket patch.  Because it deals with heraldry, it is mounted on a shield with a 'fleur-de-lis', or flower of the lily, being a heraldic symbol once carried on a flag to identify the leader of the sixth unit.
"A stylized triton symbolizes sea power and surrounding these is a large Greek letter OMEGA which, as used by mathematicians, represnets 'the ultimate'.  Hence- - VC-6, the ultimate in sea power. "
-

The skipper when I checked into the squadron at North Island was Captain Fred Bates, and the O-in-C in Atsugi was CDR R.F. Stultz. I was a Yeoman 3rd and spent 18 months in Atsugi.  When I returned I was at the end of my enlistment and got out to go to San Diego State.  Prior to VC-6 I was with VF-124 and prior to that was in the Operations Department at NAS North Island.  There my division officer was LCDR J.L. Morrissey.  He later was my CO with VF-124. Like you I have met so few men of VC-6.  Also can't seem to find much about us on the internet.  Was at NAS Pensacola (sp) a couple of years ago when my son graduated and saw the AJ that was on the flight line. So glad to run across your web page.
