In common terms Denie, who has been recognized worldwide as an expert and major photojournalist in the sport and practice of Bodybuilding (a.k.a. weight training) is also known as a 'player'.
'Player' is a slang term for a back stage wheeler dealer, political activist. Someone who is not only a functionary in any activity but also a person who makes that activity happen on all levels in a comand position.
Denie,   climbed the ladder from starting Bodybuilder at age 14, to gym operator, to Bodybuilding state champion, to photojournalist than major international sports magazine editor, to sports international organization representative, topping out as a sport commercial consultant.
All done while maintaining an alternate career in motion pictures, television, and the entertainment fields.
He started Bodybuilding at age 14 using the Weider Bodybuilding System, later going on to win IFBB Jr. Mr. East Coast (Tall) 1962, and 1966 IFBB Mr. New Jersey.
At age 15 Denie bought into and ran his first health club 'the Atlas',which was one of 5 Denie would own and run in partnerships during the next 10 years. His final independent gym 'Denie's Gym' in Jersey City, N.J. became a nationally known hardcore Bodybuilding place of action and champions in the New Jersey area, and was open in 1966 till 71 after a short stint as a training instructor at the Shelton Towers Health Club in New York City.
Denie's Gym advertising proclaimed:"The membership is made up of many fellows ranging from Mr.Universe to policemen, firemen, businessmen, and local famous athletes in the area".
The priests, and football team of St. Peter's College trained at Denie's Gym which was located just around the corner. During this period, he designed Jersey City Community College's circuit training weight room and lectured throughout the area.
A self taught photojournalist, Denie wrote his first feature at age 16, and was paid the stunning fee of $10 (Feature: Dog Em! ) which appeared under another author's name in 'Mr. America' Magazine (Jan.1963) a popular Weider publication of the day. Denie would learn a great deal about 'ghost writing' from this early prime experience.
In the 1970's Denie would later go on to distinguish himself as a major freelance sport photojournalist and researcher in the field. He currently maintains a feature publication ratio of over 2,500 articles in magazine print, backed with a few   hundred   thousand   published photo illustrations and upwards of 75 covers. The magazines include (some no longer in existence):

In America:

Strength and Health, Muscular Development (York),Iron Man (Peary Rader-publisher), Muscle Training Illustrated (Dan Lurie Publisher), Muscle Mag International (Bob Kennedy-publishing headquarted in Canada), NPC News (The official news service of America's Bodybuilding Governing Body), Muscle and Power (Harris Publishing), Muscle Digest.

INTERNATIONAL PUBLICATIONS:

Sports Athletic Journal (Germany), Bodybuilding Monthly (England), Muscle Flash (France) and various other magazines of this type in Greece and  Mexico.
In the late 1970's Denie came into his own as magazine editor working for Muscle Training Illustrated Magazine for two five year periods into early 1990. The division would come from a two year stint with Joe Weider's Flex Magazine as East Coast Editor.
In fact, Denie created Flex magazine in 1982 for the Weider group under the name of Muscle Life USA but did not ascend into the main editorship job at that time. A year later it appeared as 'Flex'.
Other editorships from the Dan Lurie group included a Denie created magazine package titled: Fitness and Nutrition Reports, participation as a photojournalist in Wrestling Training Illustrated, and World Karate.
In October 1978, a special edition of MTI magazine would appear on the newsstands edited and created by Denie for the Dan Lurie Company lambasting and exposing the growing steroid menace in Bodybuilding, and sport. This was the first internal sport magazine to do so.
It reported the first artificial steroid drug tested Bodybuilding contest in America staged in Las Vegas by Mr. America-Mr. Universe Chester Yorton on March 4-5 1978 at the Tropicana Hotel. Denie would write of this . . .

"Yorton is a 'lion in the streets of Physical Culture'

of competitive Bodybuilding's most courageous health minded promoters in the 1970s)

About two years later a young pre-med student would approach Denie, because of that magazine, about the steroid abuse issue. Today that man is Dr. Robert Goldman-Head of the Drug Testing Committee for the IFBB, consultant to 21 fitness corporations, and head of the mega corporate conglomerate, 'The High Technology Fitness and Research Institute', 'and founder of the 'National Academy of Sports Medicine', in Chicago.

In the early 80's Goldman and Denie would research and co-author a hard hitting controversial series of features on anti-steroid drug abuses, which would be generally ignored by the sport.
Time and further experiences proved them correct. Later, Goldman wrote a book titled 'Death In The Locker Room' about serious drug abuse which changed the course of history in dealing with the public's rising consciousness of steroid abuse.
Denie introduced Bob Goldman to the International Federation of Bodybuilders IFBB, and he authored some early papers on the dangers of steroid abuse, which the IFBB distributed around the world at the direction of it's President Ben Weider. Today, that sports group drug tests it's athletes, with an eye of pending recognition as an Olympic sport by the I.O.C.
In Goldman's book 'Death In The Locker Room' Denie is mentioned in this passage:
" Then, through the coaxing of Denie, the photojournalist who gave me my start, I developed a more embellished and vivid writing style...
"... Young athletes can only relate to pain; death is too foreign. Denie and I tried in desperation to reach these young minds and reverse the ominous trend we saw growing, engulfing, strangling the sport world we so love.
" The series of articles that followed may at times have been over embellished with excessive adjectives, but the basic theories have all come to pass as true. We were ridiculed for our fears and confronted with,'We don't see anyone dying or getting sick!' Those voices have long since been replaced with reported cases of liver and kidney failures and fatalities".

During this period, Denie working with Goldman, IFBB Official Doris Barrilleaux and a California DEA agent named Pat Stewart almost brought about a Congressional Subcommittee Hearing on drug abuse in Bodybuilding and sport through the office of California Congressman Robert Dornan.

Though this never transpired at that time, such an inquiry with Doctor Goldman and many major witnesses did take place10 years later, resulting in legislation to handle non medical distribution and possession of steroids as a crime. Goldman told Denie, "We're finally winning!"

An avid writer and researcher Denie notes:
" When I couldn't be Denie in print, I was James Crawford, Deacon Barry, Cody Redhawk, Lars Rheingold, Dave Beeman, Lincoln Vaslovik, a half dozen other real champions who couldn't write, the ghost writer for Dan Lurie at MTI magazine, Michele D'Arbanville and Tina Weston in women's disguise to add some spice, someone called 'the Muscle Hawk', and my last most recent identity Joe Banner".

A major accomplishment in Denie's journalistic career came in the early 1980's opening the than special vested interest sport control groups up to a free press. Because of his pressuring the reporting magazines of the period were all recognized by the Bodybuilding's national governing body as press, with all the rights granted to the press in America.

During this same period, he was instrumental in the development of Women's Bodybuilding as a competitive Sport working with the true 'founder/developer' of the concept Doris Barrilleaux, the NPC and IFBB.
Denie was appointed PRESS and MEDICAL LIAISON to the IFBB in 136 countries by President Ben Weider of Canada, and he served as a direct consultant to the National Physique Committee of the United   States forging stronger links for the sport on television.
Serving in these sport capacities, Denie working with Dr. Robert Goldman was instrumental in getting Weider nominated for a NOBEL PEACE PRIZE for his contributions to peace through sport.
