Little Mice Update Report----Friday 10/13/00Some very sad news to report. Last night we found the female " Mommy " mouse dead. Kathleen,Lynda, and I check on them many times a day. The mother mouse was doing just fine when I checked her at about 5:30pm. Her 5 babies were all nursing, and the mother mouse even came out of her nest to eat some seeds and drink some water. Kathleen went to check on them before going to bed. That was at about 10pm. Kathleen came up from the basement crying,as she discovered the terrible situation. We raced downstairs to see the scene. The little babies were clinging to her and trying to get milk from her lifeless body. I quickly got Kathleen and Lynda to assist me in cleaning their home and gathering up the little ones. The 2 older baby mice were in by their mother too. After calming Kathleen,I reminded her of just how short mice live. The 2 older babies were hers too,so she had at least 2 litters of babies--most likely a couple others earlier in her life. Now the story does not end here. The babies have been eating small bits of bread and warm milk from a bottle feeder I bought. Take a look at the following pictures to see how well the rest of the mice are doing !!! |
I placed the new milk filled bottle feeder in such a way that they can easily drink from their warm nest. They have been drinking warm milk since early this morning. I have been able to leave a small piece of fresh bread in there too. They nibble on it very slowly. Thank God that these little ones are at the weaning stage. If they were not this old,I'd have little chance of saving their lives.
With milk for the babies in the water bottle,I have fresh water in 1 bowl. In the other bowl,I have a gourmet type hamster food. The sunflower seeds are one of their favorites.
