"When Candi Staton started out her recorded career, she was married to Clarence Carter, who wrote and produced some of her earlier material. Her first 45 was a top 10 R&B hit and following it she had an amazing run of R&B chart hits with no misses, until 1979, and continued to have hits into the 80's. Although her biggest success was undoubtedly Young Hearts Run Free, a 1976 R&B #1, fine as this recording was, for the Soul of the Net it's her earlier Fame recordings that send the shivers up and down the site's virtual spine..."

" SOUL TO SOUL:
NEW CANDI STATON REISSUE CDS
TRACK SOUL VETERAN'S PATH FROM SIN TO SALVATION
Three March releases Feature Long Out-of-Print Southern Soul And Gospel

........ There are some who say the best soul music is a religious experience and there are some who say that the best gospel music is erotic. With that thought in mind, music lovers can now enjoy three separate reissue CDs celebrating the sensuality and the salvation of Staton’s earthy soul vixen days in the 1970s.....The first CD simply entitled Candi Staton..features gritty southern soul music. The British press has already embraced the project with both arms and legs with five star ratings all around. Recorded at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals where Aretha recorded Dr. Feelgood and Etta put down I'd Rather Go Blind, Staton's rare vinyl recordings for Fame 1969-1973 have been snatching hundreds of dollars at eBay auctions for years.

Backed by the equally legendary 1969 Fame/Muscle Shoals house band (keyboardist Barry Beckett, guitarist Jimmy Johnson, organist Spooner Oldham, bassist David Hood and drummer Roger Hawkins) Staton's aching voice was the centerpiece of at least three dozen sides for the label..."

They neglected to mention the (only) great soul producer Rick Hall. I've written about my disdain for (outside) producers in Rock music, but in Soul, a producer is necessary. The house band on these Staton/Hall tracks is exceptional -- great creative countermelodies! - so much better than that often over-hyped Motown rhythm section that was so dull. Actually these Staton/Hall tracks are the only Soul music that I really like.
