"Dancing With Your Photograph" lyrics (1992)

In the darkness of my room
Lit by the memories
Of the brief time we had
In each other's histories
I know it's not over yet
That indeed i'll be back with you
But until that precious day - that wondrous moment
I do what i do - to get through

[Chorus:]
Late at night
I dance
With your photograph
The only one i have of you
I dance
Around the room
WIth your photo in hand
Clutched to my heart
To songs begging you to stay
And i - or that is "we" - and we
Dance the night away

I'm wearing the ring you made
And the jacket you used to wear
I love to wrap it around myself
'Cause your smell is still there
And the power of our love
The love i miss the most
Conjures life into this photograph - and now
I'm actually dancing with your ghost

[Chorus repeats]

And i know you'll stay
Did you ever really leave?
The pain says "yes, you did"
The bond says "don't grieve"
Because i need things like this
To be able to hold on to
And am left to wish - kissing your 2D lips
That somewhere you're dancing to

[Chorus repeats]

Dance the night away
Music begs you to stay
1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3...

Commentary

Since most of the recent adds to the page have all been rather dark, i thought it was time to balance that out a bit with something a bit more light and romantic.

Written about a true life experience...about my first male love who eventually moved and became a long distance relationship. The line about songs begging you to stay was a tribute to Shakespear's Sister's "Stay", one of my favorite songs at the time...the very first line actually mixes the first two lines of the second verse of that song: "In the silence of your room/In the darkness of your dreams"

(Unrelated side note...Shakespear's Sister may have well been one of my fave groups of all time...i was very disheartened when they broke up, though Siobhan Fahey certainly is capable of keeping the mantle going as anyone who's heard their brilliant unreleased third album can attest!!! Please return to the music scene, Siobhan!!!)
