Out Here On My Own Lyrics (Irene Cara)

Sometimes I wonder
Where I've been
Who I am
Do I fit in
Make believing
Is hard alone
Out here on my own

We're always proving
Who we are
Always reaching
For that rising star
To guide me far
And shine me home
Out here on my own

But when I'm down
And feeling blue
I close my eyes
So I can be with you
Oh baby be strong for me
Baby belong to me
Help me through
Help me need you

Sometimes I wonder
Where I've been
Who I am
Do I fit in
I may not win
But I can't be thrown
Out here on my own
Out here on my own

Commentary

Not much to say about the meaning of the song as the lyrics say it all...for those who've never heard it, the music is a very lovely (but not sappy) torch ballad performed by Irene Cara in the movie Fame - yes, before it was a gawdawful reality series, it was a brilliant movie and tv show that lasted for six years - one of my faves growing up. The entire film soundtrack is worth hunting down...maybe one of the best overall soundtracks of all time.

Though this may not have been the songwriter's intention, my own interpretation of the song is that the "Baby" being sung to is a fictional dream person in the narrator's head. There's some songs that i like to think of in that way since it helps the song seem more personally meaninful - especially when singing (it's very hard for me not to sing a song without feeling and committing to the emotions within) - Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" also falls into that category - and while i've not researched any interviews with the band about the writing of the song, i think it may very well have been written about a fictional dream person and not just my own interpretation.
