"Picnic" lyrics (1990)

We live in modern days
With our modern ways
Resulting in great expenses
But let's leave that world
And live for the thrill
Of pleasing our basic senses

Let's go on a picnic
We can pack a lunch
Let's go on a picnic
Won't cost that much - yeah
Let's go on a picnic
Just you and me and the sky
Let's go on a picnic
Let's enter a free world
And pass technology by

Just like we were children
Or in our second childhood
Our only worries are the ants
But everything else is good
An anti-materialistic date
With a very low price
'Cause what's more romantic - fancy cars?
Or sharing chicken with rice?

Let's go on a picnic
Who cares if we won't get thinner
Let's go on a picnic
We can pack a dinner
Let's go on a picnic
Yeah, a dinner in the setting sun
Let's go on a picnic
Let's explore pure romance
With our minds set on having fun
YEAH

[Instrumental mixed in background sounds of kids laughing, birds, etc]

Back to the world made for us
That we hardly get to be a part of
Allow me to take advantage of the situation
And propose a toast to our love
Hey - on our picnic - yeah
You bring salad, I'll bring the dressing
On our picnic - yeah
Bring some surprises, keep me guessing
On our picnic - yeah
Two of us under the stars
Well these may be the last few years
Before we have to move to Mars

Yeah, lovers have picnic-ed for centuries
But the tradition is wearing thin
Because throughout those centuries
We've slowly destroyed the world we're in
So let's enjoy this while we can
While the sky's still blue and the grass still green
Because while the world crawls to an end
We'll recycle our love to be forever clean

Let's go on a picnic
To keep romance from being stale
Let's go on a picnic
Simplicity never fails
Let's go on a picnic
Nothing fancy, completely sweet
Let's go on a picnic
Let's hold hands in the sun, my dear
And - and - and - LET'S EAT!

Commentary

An older favorite of mine. It contains a lot of elements that i was excited about exploring at the time and have since retained...on the surface it's very sweet especially more towards the beginning, some of the music and words veer almost close to bubblegum - but it's all amidst the backdrop of ecological ruin and an awareness that the human race over the years has done a lot of exponential damage to our habitat and ourselves and wanting to go back in time and bring back some more of the innocence. There's lots of irony and dichotomy here, but make no mistake...underneath it all it still is a romantic song...yes i do write them on occasion! (Especially moreso in my earlier works) But it's not fluff (even though it sometimes camoflauges as it); it's romance against a backdrop of something more serious - looking at our place in the universe and exploring ways to express love in a ways more basic and traditionally meaningful even if all else seems to fall apart.
