"Something On His Mind Tonight" lyrics (1994/2003)

I suspect a spector detours him from where he should be
A present that regressed to past prematurely
He's being held by hope, cared for by his key
To happily ever after but to him it's already history

Done is done
Past is past
But deja is viewed
And so it lasts

There's something on his mind tonight
Someone in his head
Conversations spinning in his head tonight
Of words expressed and never said
And there's something on his mind tonight
Spirits in his psyche
Unfinished pages of old chapters tonight
In his autobiography
Tonight...
There's something on his mind

His visage smiled, but his subconscious revealed
Possibilities wrapped up and put away but not sealed
Trying too hard to appear strong when he's not yet healed
From the dungeon of desires he keeps concealed

Loss is hope
Of eventual return
Love is lessons
Left unlearned

There's something on his mind tonight
Commanding his attention
Old songs teasing his brain tonight
Of sentiments unmentioned
And there's something in his mind tonight
Unexterminated
Wisked away on an astral flight
Peacefully exasperated
Tonight
He's getting carried away

Commentary

Usually i tend to store different songs and lyric sheets in different places depening on how i feel about them...my best/favorite stuff in one folder...second tier songs that i love enough to regularly perform in another...songs that didn't seem to me to hit the mark elsewhere and songs that no longer represent me as when originally written in another...

I found this one in my folder reserved for my best stuff and it originally ended with the lines "Loss is hope/Of eventual return". I wracked my brain trying to remember if that's where i intended it to end or if it was just unfinished...Given the layout on the page and knowing my style at the time, i eventually decided that it was unfinished and took it upon myself almost a decade later to complete it...everything after the aforementioned lyric is from 2003.

I remember the feeling i was trying to capture though i no longer have the faintest idea what had inspired it...i think it may be possible that this was even one of those rare songs where i was trying to capture a feeling or state that didn't have a root in a specific event...like i had a good first line that led to the next line and just let it write itself.
