Jacky Ickx honoured - 12th April
A "jury" of motorsport journalists from a variety of countries has chosen that six-time winner Jacky Ickx be awarded the title "Driver of the Le Mans 24 Hours of the 20th Century". Ickx won the event in 1969 (that classic finish), 1975, 1976, 1977, 1981, and 1982 .. and very nearly 1983 too as, with co-driver Derek Bell closing, their sister car "expired" as it crossed the line. One more lap and it would have been 7!
Ickx will be made Citizen of Honour of the city of Le Mans in a special ceremony by the Mayor of Le Mans and President of the Urban Community of Le Mans. In addition, he has accepted the invitation of the ACO and the General Council of la Sarthe to act as President of Honour of the 68th 24 Heures du Mans and give the official start of the race.

At this site I will bring you my review of the illustrous career of Belgium's greatest race car driver

With 6 wins at Le Mans, and over 50 victories in major endurance/sportscar races, Ickx is arguably the best endurance racer of all time. His versatility was shown at a very early age when he beat Roger De Coster for the Belgian junior motorcycle trials championship. Jacky chose cars over motorcycles and went on to be European Touring car(2 liter) champion in 1966. He continued his winning ways by being European F2 champion in 1967, twice runner up in F1 world champioships(with 8 career GP victories), twice world Endurance champion, Can-Am champion in 1979, winner of several rallies, including the grueling Paris-Dakar Desert raid--an event he still competes in.

Jacky Ickx will bring in the new century by competing in the Dakar rally once again. His co-driver will be none other than his daughter, Vanina, a regular in the Belgian Procar series.

THEY DID IT

Jacky and Vanina had an excellent race, winning their class, and finished 18th overall. More importantly, they assisted on several occassions, fellow competitors, who had crashed or broken down . Congratlations to both!!

Le Mans 1977, the two Porsche 936s before the race. Jacky would start the race in #3, but when the engine blew in the 4th hour, he was moved to the #4 car. At the time the car had suffered mechanical problems, and was in 41st place. A typical, tremendous Ickx performance at Le Mans, would bring the #4 car back to victory.
