Stupid Lists - Anime tapes
You can see my Ranma 1/2 video info on this page
The text on this page has been removed due to the pointlessness of keeping a list and not maintaining it. I removed the list of fansubs I got simply because it'll help stop companies from figuring out what some fans like and license the titles, thereby taking it "out of the hands of the fans" who know and love these series much better than the companies who license them, then translate it badly, mangle the names, and then refuse to release it on Subtitled VHS but charge what I feel are ridiculously higher prices compared to what they could be offering fans. I realize companies need to make a profit but at what cost to the fans? Anyway, due to things happening in the anime market, this is how I feel. I hope you understand.
Update 9/21/2004 -
I may start listing anime in my collection including import anime DVDs, mainly as a way to put a finger in the eye of companies like ADV who do nothing but license good anime then do lousy translations and subtitling, not to mention doing an English dub that really blows. Basically, because I've been able to find these discs at $10 apiece, if the licensed version had been as cheap, I'd have bought it instead! 85 minutes of Panyo Panyo Digi Charat for $30? Yeah right!
I basically hate the DVD format due to all the crap that goes on with digitally compressed video and the drawbacks of the players themselves. I'm also against DVDs due to the likelihood of the reflective layer rotting away leaving the disc basically a useless pie of plastic in about 20 years or so. A 1989 CD I have is already doing this. And not the least, the asinine pricing of these products. Considering how around 1992 to 1994, the dub was $10 cheaper than the sub VHS edition, and then the Laserdisc was $15 more than the VHS sub! Without competing formats, why are the majority of new releases being priced at $30 at all? The discs are cheaper to make over tapes (though tapes are more easily replaced singly than an entire production run of defective DVDs!!) so the profit margin has the capability to allow for cheaper pricing, and thereby sell more units.
Hell, these companies releasing translated manga and anime don't provide sales figures! Why? It's not in bad taste to say how many of a title you sell! Sales figures are available for other similar items, and certain anime sales figures are known in Japan, but here in the U.S.? Nope. And there's no reason for it.
Anywho, nobody will get my money for U.S. editions for these imports unless they're $10 a disc with decent mastering and perfect subtitles:
(besides, these could be licensed in Hong Kong anyway! ^_-)
- Ground Defense Force Mao-chan (3 discs - bought well before Pioneer announced it in Previews)
- DNA(squared) - 2 discs - Also bought months before CPM said they licensed it
- Card Captor Sakura 2nd movie The Sealed Card - had it a couple of YEARS before it was released in the U.S.!!
- Candy Candy 3rd OVA - By Animation International, who DOES license stuff for Hong Kong release!
- Mamotte Shugogetten TV (3 discs) and OVA (2 discs) - No U.S. license exists and I'm not waiting!! I shouldn't have to!
- Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar special - Eh?
- Digi Charat movie - So far not listed in Previews
- Digi Charat Nyo Part 1 (3 discs), V.4, Part 3 (2 discs) - Don't know who may have it, don't care as I need only 1 or 2 discs to complete the set.
- Ojamajo Do Re Mi 1st TV series Part 1 (3 discs) and the "#" Movie - No U.S. licence exists!
- Cheeky Angel - The import discs run to 6, and I need only #5 for a complete set. No U.S. license known at this time, though Viz has the manga. (and long O spellings are missing)
- Azumanga Daioh - I didn't know import DVD sets existed until I saw them this year while in Canada. ONLY 3 DISCS! TAKE NOTE, ADV! ONLY 3! Your own pricing is killing your sales! Look inward for peace!! And yes the subs are just fine! ^_^
- Ai Yori Aoshi V.3 - Which is the end of the series, and it was only $8 Canadian. I usually don't buy the end of a series without the rest, so I hope to find it all. Don't know who's got the anime. Toktopop has the manga.
- Love Hina Christmas Special - Didn't Bandai charge $30 for so little?
- Doukyusei 2 - 2 discs - Ultra thin discs that work on my player. No known U.S. license.
- Demon Fighter Kocho - Now, a U.S. license does exist for this, and it was $17 in Previews. I didn't know about it at the time I bought it. Strangest of all, it includes the horrible English dub audio. Most imports don't have English dub tracks. Chinese, maybe, but not English.
- Now, 2 Miyazaki films I bought on DVD: "omoide poro poro" and "Pon Poko" 2 years before Disney listed one of those in Previews recently with a bloated price.
- Chobits - A friend gave me this 3 disc set.
- Sister Princess TV series (4 discs) and Sister Princess RePure (2 discs) - I am not going to have to put up with ADV's overpriced garbage.
- Hanaukyou Maids (2 disc set) - all I need is the 3rd volume with the last 3 episodes. Pioneer listed it in Oct 04 Previews and overpriced as well.
More will definitely be added, but it may be awhile before I do. Having collected these, I have few anime wants left, and very little new coming out is priced anywhere I'd pay money for.
