Antenna registration number 1235187 is a 608.1 meter (1,996 feet) tower. It was built for Hunt Broadcasting of Lakewood, CO to facilitate the move-in of two suburban FM stations to the Denver market. A 101.5 MHz FM station changed its city of license from Fort Morgan, CO to Strasburg, CO and a 107.1 MHz FM station changed its city of license from Brush, CO to Bennett, CO in order to make this move. Each transmits with 97 kilowatts ERP using a shared 6-bay antenna providing coverage into the Denver metro market.
The tower is located about 37 miles east of Denver International Airport in very rural north-central Adams County. It is about 12.5 miles north of US Hwy 36 at mile marker 114 and north of Deer Trail, CO. The tower coordinates are 39-55-26.9N 103-58-26.3W.

This is a distant view of the tower as it appeared on 7/13/03. The tower appeared to be about 1/4 completed at this time with 1 set of anti-collision strobes and 3 sets of guy wires in place. I estimate that it is about 500 feet tall at this point.

This closer view shows the gin-pole at the top of the tower. The gin-pole is basically another piece of tower with a pulley at the top. It is temporarily fastened to the side of the uppermost section of the tower that is being installed. It is then used with a winch on the ground to pull up each new tower section and hold it in place while the tower crew bolts it to the next lower section. The gin-pole is then raised to the newly installed section and the process is repeated.

In this photo you can see the end view of a new section of tower on its side just to the right of the tower base. This section is about the size of a small car.

The home made sign at the gate leading onto the property indicates that Seacomm Erectors is installing this tower.

This is the first intersection south of the tower. It is Deter Winters Road and East 112th Avenue. Deter Winters Road is also known as 57N Road. The first intersection to the north is signed Deter Winters Road and East 152nd Avenue. All of the signs have the Adams County logo on them.
08/25/03 UPDATE

The owner says the tower was topped off 08/16/03. I visited the site on 08/25/03 and took the following photos. There are now 8 sets of guy wires anchored at 3 distances from the tower base. No antennas were present yet and the gin pole still appeared to be attached to the top.
The tower is now easily visible from I-70 directly north of the Peoria exit (not to be confused with Peoria Street in Aurora). This is a distance of about 20 miles.
I noticed that there is a lot of outbound air traffic from Denver International Airport just to the south of this tower. I checked my aeronautical charts and discovered that there is an aircraft navigation transmitter a few miles south of the tower just off US Hwy 36. This is the "BYERS" VOR which IDs as BVR on 113.5 MHz.

The uppermost section of the tower is tapered to a smaller face width. Although it's a little difficult to see in the photo, the upper guy wires do have a noticeable amount of sag in them. This is not surprising considering that each wire is close to 1/2 mile in length.
11/11/05 UPDATE

During my next visit on 11/11/05 I found this 6-bay radome covered FM broadcast antenna mounted at the top of the tower. FCC records identify it as a SHI-6600HP antenna (Shively Labs) mounted at 600 meters (1,968 feet) AGL. The top set of anti-collision strobes is also visible above the antenna in this photo.
