By mid-1966 Susan went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she officially became a Catholic her husband"s faith, on her forty-eight birthday. Eaton Chalkley had been a leading layman and a devout churchgoer and benefactor of the church of his community. She wanted to learn to love God the same way Eaton had. The ceremony was officiated over by the Reverend McGuire, Susan"s and Eaton"s old friend from Rome, who had returned from Italy to take over the pastorate of St. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in that city. He had been her spiritual support during Eaton"s illness.
