Tepee Camping along the Allegheny River

You can go back in time in these authentic, 18 foot, Souix style tepees located in our campground in Tionesta, PA. These tepees are situated on the waters edge of the Allegheny River, where you can wake up in the morning and fish right outside your tepee door, while eagles fly overhead. A canoe is even provided.

Wilderness Island Camping on the Allegheny River

The Allegheny River Islands wilderness is made up of seven islands in the Allegheny River, totaling 368 acres, located between Buccaloons and Tionesta. On our three day excursions, you embark on your journey from the Kinzua Dam and paddle from there down-river approximately 5 hours, to Crulls Island. There you will set up camp among old river bottom trees on this 96 acre island. We've awoke to see whitetail deer standing around our smoldering fire pit. The second day of paddling will take you past Thompsons Island, 67 acres of pristine wilderness. The best island for your second evening's camp would be Courson, located just above Tidioute. Your third day of paddling brings you past King, Baker, Hemlock and No-name Islands, then back to Tionesta.

Outback Adventures Outpost, Tionesta PA

TIONESTA, known to the Iriquois as "the land between the waters", is the gateway to the Allegheny National Forest. The town is unchanged by time, quiet in nature, a naturalist's escape.

Bald Eagles are often seen on trips. We have several nesting pairs along this section of the river. They also have been sighted on Tionesta Creek.
