THE WEEKLY HOWL
SEPTEMBER 4, 1999
Woof! Hello! With summer just about over, I want to tell you a story about the days when my mistress had an above ground round swimming pool in our back yard. She used to let us dogs swim in it with her. That was back when Wolf and Crystal lived with us. We had a ladder in the pool and although the pool was only about 4 1/2 feet deep, we dogs could jump right off the ladder into the water and go for a nice, cool swim. It was exhilerating on a hot summer afternoon! Our mistress would toss a ball into the water for us and let us swim after it to fetch it back to her. Crystal loved to jump in, swim to the ball, grab it in her mouth, and swim back to our mistress to give it right to her. She'd lay it in her hand and then give her a wet doggy kiss on her nose! Crystal was also good at pulling people along through the water. They could hold onto her collar and let Crystal do the swimming, pulling them across the pool from one end to the other. Wolf didn't like the water as much. He had to be pushed in. But once he was in, he was fine, and swam all around and had fun. There are home movies of us all splashing around in that wonderful pool. Alas, today the pool is no more. The yard is full of flowers and there's a nice bench to sit on and a fence all around it. But no pool. It developed a leak and had to be taken away..... sigh! But it was great fun while it lasted! After the pool was gone, Pepsi and Ian went with our mistress to the local beach. Dogs used to be allowed there (although, no longer) and Pepsi got to go swimming in the waves. It was just an inland cove, so the waves were very small and calm. But when Pepsi got out to the point to where his paws didn't touch the bottom and he had to swim, he got scared, stood up on his hind legs, and grabbed our mistress by her shoulders with his front paws! He tried to climb out on top of her! But he was much too big to carry that way! It was so funny! It's a pity that dogs aren't allowed on the beach any more. So I don't get to go there. I love the water. I get to go out in the rain on rainy days and splash in the puddles, but the mistress doesn't like me to do that. But I don't mind it at all! Us labradors are water dogs. See you next week. Woof!
