Patrick D. McCoy, Conductor

This page is designed to introduce Virginia State University music graduate, Patrick D. McCoy to
other trained instrumentalists and singers who
would be interested in collaborating in musical projects that promote musical excellence in the church, concert hall and institutions of higher learning.

Mr. McCoy is from Petersburg, Virginia. The son of Alex and Velma Pulley, he is the youngest of three children. His area of concentration is voice and considers himself a lyric baritone, even though he is also flexible in the tenor repertory as well. In recent years he has served as soloist in several major works including Mozart's Regina coeli, K.275 and Bach's Kantate Nr.61 with the Virginia State University Concert Choir, Guido Haazen's Missa Luba accompanied by the acclaimed Ethos Percussion Group, Messiah-by Handel with the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Pergolesi's Magnificat with the Petersburg Festival Chorus with members of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Mass in C major by Joseph Rheinberger.

In the operatic realm, Patrick recently had wonderful opportunity to sing in a premiere of an opera entitled, "The Edge of Glory" composed by Emory Waters, a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music. This performance presented by the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra-Ulysses Kirksey, conductor was in memory of Lillian Edwards, who served as the orchestra's president. During his years at Virginia State University, Patrick also participated in many of the Opera Theatre performances that often featured the arias and scenes of Mozart, Kirk Mechem, Leonard Bernstein, and others.

December 2000, Mr. McCoy will return to his alma mater as guest tenor soloist in the Magnificat in D major, BWV 243-In observance of the 250th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach with the VSU Concert Choir, Johnnella L. Edmonds, conducting in THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERT and will be guest tenor soloist in Messiah, by G. F. Handel with the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Ulysses Kirksey, conductor.

Currently, he teaches general./choral music at Peabody Middle School, Director of Music/Organist at Covenant Presbyterian Church and as pianist at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, all located in Petersburg, Virginia.

Patrick recently ended a six-year term as tenor soloist at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, located in Petersburg where he sang in the Parish Choir. Ernest A. Suerken is Director of Music.

The Aria Group, 2000 welcomes all persons to get to know this fine musician who holds the art of music very dear and would enjoy very much to meet others in an effort to "Make A Joyful Noise!"

"A Time of Remembering"-The Annual Spring Concert, 2000

(picture) soloist in "As By the Streams of Babylon" by R. Nathaniel Dett. This concert was presented in honor of Johnnella L. Edmonds' 16th year as conductor of the Virginia State University Concert Choir. A native of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Mrs. Edmonds earned the Bachelor of Music from Howard University and the Master of Music from The Catholic University of America. This talented lady is highly regarded as a professor, choral clinician, adjudicator, mezzo-soprano soloist and accomplished pianist, of which Patrick had the honor of having her accompany him on his Senior Recital.

The Virginia State University Concert Choir is a choral ensemble which he holds very true to his heart. While he was a member, Mr. McCoy had many wonderful performance opportunities. In February 2001, the choir performed at the Southern Division of the Music Educators National Conference in Louisville, KY. The program featured the works of Bach, Casals, Hogan, and U. S. Moore. This is a group that definitely deserves to be heard.
For concert scheduling please contact Johnnella L. Edmonds at jledmonds@vsu.edu or the University Music Office at (804) 524-5311.

Kathleen Battle, soprano

This is my absolute favorite soprano. Yes she has had a rough career since her dismissal from the NY Met, but no one can not deny her angelic, voice of crystalline purity which has won and continues to win her world acclaim. She recently performed a recent recital at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which proves that she still posesses what it takes. I look forward to her Carnegie Hall Recital in the future.
