Early explorers went back to Europe with many tales of American Indians, but, the idea that people talked about the most was the one of self-government and individual liberties. This was a new idea to most Europeans, who lived under the rule of kings and noblemen. The idea of Personal Liberty and equality became very popular in Europe, and many people wrote books about it. In the new world too, people were writing and talking.
One of them was Ben Franklin, who said in a famous essay that the American Indians were more advanced in Their thinking about government than the Europeans....The seeds of a revolution were being planted....
Iroquois society became a model for many of the American Revolutionaries, including Thomas Paine and Ben Franklin. Twelve years before the American Revolution, Franklin, who was very familiar with the Iroquois government, suggested that American Colonist take it for a model. The Iroquois had a League of six "nations" or tribes that stretched all the way from New England to the Mississippi river. Franklin suggested that the 13 English colonies form a league. They did, of coarse, and after the Revolution it became the United States--reflecting the Iroquois model.
