Backgrounds without
using an "advanced editor" method
for Webtv PageBuilder webpages

Use these codes anywhere on your webpage
to change the background image, etc. of your page.
See the list  below  for the page styles
that these codes work on.

<script></script>
<body background="url of image" logo="url of image" address="url or text" instructions="url" credits="url">

NOTE: The text, link and vlink colors and bgcolor could not be changed on this page style by adding those inside the body tag---the colors defaulted to the Webtv automatically set colors; but on some page styles, the text color can be changed by adding text="color" inside the body tag (see ctpaso's page--off-line/unavailable, as of 2003 ).

The logo image, address, clickable credits button and clickable instructions button are displayed when the "info" key on the keyboard is pressed. (An "info button" is also accessible from the "options" key.)

Her page is currently using a tripod hosted image
( http://greatbacks.tripod.com/Light/light118.jpg ) as the webpage background image, so it may not been seen all the time due to tripod's attempt at blocking remote loading of images.

Her page contained more javascript code than the one used above and below----I just kept deleting code until I found the bare minimum needed to produce the result of the background image appearing for this webpage.

The webpage background image shows up with the 2.7 Webtv upgrade version and for an iMac 'puter using Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape 6. I do not know if it will work for upgrade versions below 2.7.

This method does NOT work with all page styles.

The page styles this works on are:

blue
green
red
grey
easter
it's a boy
it's a girl
wedding
finance

(also halloween, but since additional
"add an item"--"text" areas are used,
some of the Webtv automatically added
images appear)

The "javascript" and body tag codes can be added anywhere on the page----at the top of the page, in the middle of the page, or at the bottom of the page; the only thing that seems to matter is that the "javascript" code needs to be "above" the body tag code.

This page was created by:

  1. Selecting the Green page style.
  2. Unchecking the box in the "Edit title" area.
  3. Adding text, etc. in an "add an item"--"text" area.
  4. Adding the "javascript" code in a new and separate "add an item"--"text" area near the bottom of the page.

    The "javascript" code used:

    <script></script>

  5. Adding the body tag containing the background image
    ( startile.gif ), etc. in a new and separate "add an item"--"text" area, directly below the "javascript" code "add an item"--"text" area.

    The body tag that was added:

    <body background="url of image" logo="url of image">

NOTE: The text, link and vlink colors and bgcolor could not be changed on this page style by adding those inside the body tag---the colors defaulted to the Webtv automatically set colors; but on some page styles, the text color can be changed by adding text="color" inside the body tag (see ctpaso's page below).

A few cautionary notes
are below.

ctpaso's page,  Bunny's Way (off-line/unavailable, as of 2003) , also explains and demonstrates the process for this "new" method.

and jaxred adds even more information with his page:
A Simple PageBuilder Advanced Editor

The method used on this page produces some validation errors.

Go to this page---  interesting2  ---to see the type of errors this method produces.

The main reason that I hesitate to recommend this method is because the result is so quirky---the background image really "should" not be showing up---see #5 at the bottom of  this page, which reads:

5. Subsequent body tags now ignored: The latest version of our browser now parses only the first body tag it encounters and ignores subsequent ones.

An alternative to the method used on this page to produce a webpage background image is an  "advanced editor" method . The advantages of using the "advanced editor" method are that it also allows you to designate the colors of text, link, vlink, alink and bgcolor and it produces fewer validation errors than the method used on this page.
