THE AIRPLANE THAT CHANGED STUNT AT THE '76 NATS

The following pictures, urls, and comments show what I really flew at the '76 and '77 Nats.

'77 NATS PLACE WINNER IS SHOWN WITH THE LARGER STABILATOR NEEDED FOR STABILITY WITH SMALLER PROPS AT HIGHER RPMS THAN WAS USED IN '77

The ("go ahead, make my day!" ) 44 MAGNUM stunter is the one with the swept back tips.

AIRPLANE THAT CHANGED STUNT ('76 Nats 2nd place winner in the 1/2 A Stunt event) is pictured on the first page above. It was a full size modified VOODOO combat kit with a balanced stabilator, sharp leading edge wing, and  weighed in at 10.5 ounces. My "44 MAGNUM" was a winner in more ways than one in '77 -- check out the "20 POINT ROW" below. The VOODOO kit later incorporated the longer tail that my research proved was necessary.)

VOODOO INFORMATION (The close stabilator tends to stall under some conditions -- the wing is okay. My original analysis of the big beast was wrong. Please forget about the rest of the information on the next page.)

VERY INACCURATE VOODOO REPORT (The columnist knew the truth, but what I flew at the Nats was unbelievable and he just could not bring himself to report the evidence that was very clear to his senses -- see top paragraph in the second column. Please click on the next url to bring up AMA's copy of the very incorrect report, or scroll down to the last and least "picture" on page 2 of this site that shows the phony report in MODEL AVIATION magazine. The airplane reported in the article is half the size and flies on half the line length of the VOODOO that I actually flew in competition.)

RIDICULOUS FIRST PAGE OF PART 1 ARTICLE The light bulbs on the wing tips and the "wheat lamps" on the tail were used with time-lapsed photography to determine minimum turn radius performance at night in cold winter weather. Airplanes turn tighter in cold weather. Our best data was obtained on a calm, foggy night that was so cold that the engine exhaust froze on the plane! At the time we just knew we were working in vain -- surprise, surprise when we examined the film. (The first and second page of my RIDICULOUS article with some of my most fun rhetoric are posted on page 2 of this web site.) http://www.modelaircraft.org/membersonly/archive/printimage.asp?imagefile=documents/SET1-10/AMA8507/00000070.jpg

The greatest experiences with "R" were those where 1/2 A competition was canceled because of wind speed but my "too large of an airplane, with too long of a line length" (?) demonstrated its precision flying capabilities in MYTH BUSTER style! RIDICULOUS became necessary because of complaints from some of our "visually challenged" stunt judges that they were unable to see our combat airplanes because of their speed and size. So, with our ridiculous technology we created planes large enough and slow enough so that even our slowest thinking, seeing eye dog companion stunt judge would have no excuses.

RULE PROPOSAL CL-84-10 -- Correct geometric diagram/description of Square Horizontal Eight (MODEL AVIATION magazine Dec. 1982 page 111 - my BLACKBALL BALL web site explains what happened when this RULE PROPOSAL was rejected by STUNT ELITISTS.

Instructions to bring up the "44 Magnum" picture. Use the following url to bring up the AMA archive page. < http://www.modelaircraft.org/MembersOnly/archive/resultsimage.htm  > (August 1982 issue of M. A., page 68). Click on "archive," scroll down to "Select An Issue" and locate the August 1982 issue of M.A., then click on "Brouse Issue" and punch the +/- numbers to page 70, then bring up the page by clicking on "Print This Page." This is the only way I am able to show this page, sorry. Maybe the AMA will help us to make telling our story a little easier in the future. THANKS AMA. The problem is now fixed - 10/05.
