Hi Shipmates,
I thought you would enjoy these photos I took in the Spring of 1946, while the Wilson was on it's shakedown cruise to GTMO. There are two shots of the torpedo being fired as I had one enlarged, That is on the Ship's Photo Pages. I am also including a message I had taken later in my service. and you will find it on the Ship's History Page. Thought I was off the Wilson by then, I thought you might find it of interest. Hope you enjoy these, Vincent DeLuca,,RM 3/c,....vtd54@aol.com |

PARIS TOUR GROUP DURING MED CRUISE, JAN--MARCH 1952 |
A Group of Wilson Crewmen who participated in a tour to Paris, while the ship was Visiting Versailles, France while in the Mediterranean in 1952 and
Interesting to note that COMSIXTHFLT required all officers going a shore in"mufti" (civilian clothes) must wear a hat ( the ever popular Borsalino)and carry gloves (Barra). Going ashore was interpreted to mean "leaving the ship and going over the side". A string was fastened to a "Duty hat" that was worn when "requesting permission to leave the ship" . Once a few steps down the ladder, the string pulled taught and the hat was retrieved on deck for the next officer. The directive was followed to the letter. There was another clothing order not very well enforced. All officers will wear stocking garters so as not to expose "an unsightly hairy leg" when seated and crossing their legs. The best one of all was a ComOne directive that, "all Naval Personnel shall refrain from having automobile accidents!". |
STUDY OF THE HUMAN ART FORM?? |
The picture was taken in Ville Franche, 9 March, 1952. It was Censored out of the Cruise Book. It was to appear on Page 62.
Considered too pornographic for its day and not in keeping with the wholesome values of Wilson sailors. Of course one could argue, "Have no fear, the Shore Patrol is here"! The white hat in the foreground is that of a potential Art student interested in the human form. Others in the room were just listening to the music. Thanks to Phil Dilloway |
