Elvis Costello, Brad Paisley and Loretta Lynn lead Anchored in Love, produced by John Carter Cash. The album features music written by or associated with June, including Costello's take on Ring of Fire. "Not every song on the record is one she wrote," says John Carter, noting Paisley's performance of Keep on the Sunny Side and Lynn's rendition of Wildwood Flower, songs that June learned from her mother, Maybelle Carter. "Some are things she perpetuated through the years." June's daughter Carlene Carter performs the Johnny & June duet Jackson with Brooks & Dunn's Ronnie Dunn. "I show up with nothing in a strange hotel room in a strange city. I don't know anybody. . . . "WALK THE LINE FILMING WRAPPED UP Producer gives city a big thumbs up for 'Walk the Line' role By John Beifuss Contact September 3, 2004 "Ever since that Sears Roebuck radio came into our house, Memphis had been the center of the world in my head, the one place where people didn't have to spend their lives sweating bare survival out of a few acres of dirt, where you could sing on the radio . . . There was no question it was where I needed to be." - Johnny Cash, writing in "Cash: The Autobiography" The makers of "Walk the Line," the film biography of Johnny Cash, weren't as certain as the future Man in Black that Memphis was where they needed to be. But Wednesday, on their last day of shooting here after 47 days in Memphis and the Mid-South, they said they were glad they chose Tennessee over Louisiana, even though the latter state offered economic incentives that would have saved the production close to $2 million. "In some ways it was an emotional decision; it was not a financial decision," said Alan Blomquist, executive producer of "Walk the Line," which stars Joaquin Phoenix as Cash, Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash and Memphis actress Ginnifer Goodwin as Cash's first wife. "Johnny Cash grew up in Dyess, Ark., where we shot Monday," Blomquist said. "He lived in Memphis, and we went to all the houses he lived in and checked on them as possible locations. This was his town." Blomquist said the authenticity of the Mid-South settings was intended to help the actors and director James Mangold create a believable, powerful film. "It's a redemption story," he said of the movie, which chronicles Cash's life from his early days in Arkansas to his first recordings with Sam Phillips and Sun to his famous 1968 concert at Folsom Prison. "It's about the love affair of Johnny and June, and how it redeems a guy who's had some trouble with success. And it ends on a triumphant note." Local shooting on the movie wrapped late Wednesday, with a scene in a Midtown alley near Madison and McLean. Phoenix and most of the other nonlocal cast and crewmembers headed for Los Angeles on Thursday for three final days of shooting, which begin on Tuesday. After that, "It's all in the can," Blomquist said. "Let the editing begin." Blomquist - who previously scouted Memphis for "Everybody's All-American" with Dennis Quaid and Jessica Lange, which eventually was shot in Louisiana - described the Memphis experience as "spectacular" in terms of weather, community support and official cooperation. "We're very pleased with how things have gone," he said. Thirty-one of the 47 local shooting days took place at 26 locations in West Tennessee, including an Aug. 10 recreation of the Folsom Prison concert at the Pipkin Building at the Fairgrounds and an Aug. 6 concert in which Mud Island stood in for a Hollywood Bowl-type amphitheater. Shooting also occurred in Mississippi and Arkansas. The Fox Searchlight film, budgeted at about $28 million, is slated for a spring release. Blomquist said the producers are discussing a possible Memphis premiere, but nothing has been determined. Blomquist estimated about 60 percent of the production's 200 crew members were from Tennessee, with many from Nashville. The cast includes Memphis child actress Hailey Anne Nelson as Cash's daughter, Rosanne. The logistics on a period film are complex, Blomquist said, because "you have to control every aspect." For example, when a stretch of South Main was converted into Union Avenue circa 1955, "you've got to control the storefronts, the signage, the cars, the costumers, the haircuts " He said Memphis & Shelby County Film commissioner Linn Sitler and deputy film commissioner Sharon Fox O'Guin were the "secret weapons" who kept everything moving smoothly between the production and the various municipalities. "I've shot all over the country and all over the world, and they are really special," said Blomquist, whose eclectic previous production credits include "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Spawn" and "The Cider House Rules." "Of all the movies we've gotten in the 18 years I've been film commissioner, I think this was the one we came closest to losing," Sitler said. "It's a testimony to the effort that the city and county put forth . . . and also important because this was one movie that really needed to be shot here."
