THE INTRIGUE of KACY

July 1, 1996 - March 14, 2007

While petting the sleeping face of my beloved Greyhound Kacy,

I wished that he could tell me what it was like:

To run as fast as he could in front of hundreds of cheering people...
To be first to cross the finish line...
To be second to cross the finish line...
To finish the race last...
To not be able to finish the race at all.
To have his ears tattooed...
To be loaded into transports and driven away...
To try to fall asleep when afraid...
To try not to soil his kennel where he needed to lay, rest and sleep...
To be forced to run when he was sore or hurting or sick...
To try and rest comfortably when he didn't feel well...
To be constantly muzzled...
To finish eating and still be hungry...
To be thirsty with no water left for him to drink...
To be too cold or too warm.

I wished that he could tell me:

How painful it was when his right ear was ripped in two places...
How sore his mouth once had to be.
About the people that loved him...
About the people that frightened him...
About the people that hurt him.
About his kennel friends that were injured...
About his kennel friends that became too sick to run...
About his kennel friends that were taken away and he never saw them again.

I wished that he could tell me:

What he dreams about in his sleep...
Why he sometimes wags his tail while asleep...
Why he more often cries in his sleep.

I wished that he could tell me:

About the people who took care of him when he could no longer earn enough money to pay for his keep...
About his first night away from the track kennel...
About the first night in his foster home...
About the first night in his forever home.

Most of all, though, I wished that he could tell me how it now feels to...

Be constantly loved, kissed and petted...
Share his home with his racing buddies, Roody and Debi...
Run when he feels like it instead of being forced to...
Not be hungry or thirsty...
Sleep on a nice soft bed...
Sleep all day if he wants to...
Have stuffy toys to play with...
Have chewy treats to occupy his time...
Go for nice rides in the van with the windows down...
Go for walks on the beach after supper...
Have everybody that he meets, pet and ask about him...
Be cared for when not feeling well...

I know that he will never be able to answer my questions... but through his unconditional love, trust and companionship he eases my thoughts and assures me that he will be forever grateful and content as long as he is with me.

"...The God of the whole gave a living soul to furred and to feathered thing. And I am my brother's keeper. And I will fight his fight; and speak for the beast and bird till the world shall set things right."
